you-pick flower farm

FWIW...
For the last ten years or so I've planted wild flowers in both cultivated areas and strewn seed along our gravel road shoulders...weeds are a big problem in cultivated areas...
I buy seeds in bulk and mostly plant cosmos, zinnias and a few sunflowers... occasionally I throw in straw flowers/bachelor buttons and poppies....all do well here...The SDOT plant a similar mix on the highway medians here and can be something to behold...!

Good Luck...

Care to share your bulk source? We have planted a small zinnia garden the last two years and the wife loves them.

I have 5 acres I am stumping and on the fence about what to plant to keep the ag rating. The only thing I know for certain is it WON'T be replanted in trees.

Sounds like an interesting concept. If somebody else is doing it, I would look really hard at what they are doing, figure out why it's working, and then figure out how to make it better. My first thought is once you get the flowers going, how will you market it? Then location comes to mind. How far are you away from the wedding venues that you plan on selling your flowers to? What accommodations do you have for people coming out there? bathrooms? parking? Tools to cut the flowers? what will you provide to them to put their flowers in after they pick them? Is there any profit in this?

Around here, people start up all sorts of businesses on their land. Most fail because they fail to understand that the people who are spending money to go to farms and rural properties are not in love with your land or your product. They have to make an effort to get there and they need a good reason for them to go there. This is where you marketing plan is going to make it for you, or fall flat.

If you do it because you are going to plant the flowers anyway, will you plant them in beds and create paths for people to get to all of them without having to walk through your flowers? Will you have flowers that are in bloom all season long for them to pick from?

I learned a long time ago that writing a business plan is truly worth the effort. It forces you to answer a lot of questions that many don't think about. If you can't put it on paper, then you are not ready to start the business.
