I'm not trying to start anything, but it seems to me the quality of ability in truck drivers has gone downhill substantially. They used to be well thought of, considered the "Knights of the Road", now they seem to be like everyone else, just trying to get done.
I had one of a national carriers "finest" come in this am with a load of flour, he hit my building 3 times before he got into the dock! This has almost become a regular event, and my dock is not hard to get into. I'd post a pic, but I don't want to name names........I'll put up a pic of my stairs tho.

Well said Jagman. I totally agree. Not sure if it's because of all the aggressive type driving they (the truck drivers) have to put up with being on the road all day, but it's nothing like it used to be. They used to be the most courteous driver on the road. Now it seems more like 'get the heck out of my way or I'd just as soon run you over'. I guess they are driving aggressive like so many others nowdays. I'm sure there are many "Knights of the Road" out there, they are just harder to find now days.

Jag and Moon; There are probably more good truck drivers than SUV and minicar drivers percentage wise. Yeah, there's some idiots to be sure. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif One that really sticks in my mind is the jerkwater jive puking Freightliner driver, that went around myself and a string of four wheelers, in fog so dense, you couldn't see 50' in front of you. Think he was going 55? Way over that. I ask him on the crappyband if ratty looking Freightliner drivers has xray vision, and told him to slow down. He came back with quite a number of insults directed at me and the rest of the 4 wheel fools in his way. When he finally shutup, the other drivers were on him like stink on dog dumpings. He was just the kind that most people remember. You give them a break, and you'll most likely get a couple back. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( Sounds like I should check out FedEx in a couple months. Am I right in assuming they train you to the point of getting your Class A CDL )
Not sure - hafta ask the kid and he just left. They do train you - the training period is two weeks long and includes quite a bit of actual driving. The training is paid, but it's only minimum wage.

BTW, the kid passed his driving and manuverability test last week, so I think he's pretty much in at this point - just has to do another two weeks of "ride along" with the guy who has the route he will be taking over.

Of course he's all starry-eyed about owning his own business and making a decent wage .... one thing I need to get him to ask and find out about is fuel pricing ..... what provisions there are for increasing fuel costs. He did mention at one point that once they relocate to the new Home Delivery terminal up in Richfield that they will have subsidized fuel available ..... at something like $1.25 a gallon his cost (the price when he told me several weeks ago ... probably higher now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I have been, will never again. Would be good if it wasn't for the state revenue, and the feds with their hand out and when you come upon a mistake by either of them, it takes a full time person to deal with the people with the "Christmas help" know how that only knows how to pass the buck. Leaves a really sour taste in your mouth. When you pay the amount quarterly that they say you have to pay and then they send you a check with a notice that you overpaid and they take a penalty because you didn't pay the right amount.... gets me hot just talking about it. Hope it works for him, I just got really fed up with the incompetence at all levels.

The reason there is so many bad drivers is because there is a very large shortage of drivers and companies are forced to take whatever they can get. Large companies have drivers that will train new drivers. Most good drivers don't want to do training anymore because some of the new recruites are very difficult, hard headed and don't want to listen or are not cut out to be drivers. Most trainers that are good at what they do also find it hard to sleep with a new driver behind the wheel, so they give up training. There are trainers that don't care about anything but the extra pay, so they give the trainee a passing grade so they can get the next trainee.

I took a month and did a survey of drivers and found the reason for some aggressive truck drivers is because they are sick and tired of people pulling out in front of them, cutting them off, tailgating, not dimming lights when following or apphroaching and the list goes on. Most people look at trucks as something that is just in their way. They flip you off for no reason. People don't understand why a truck pulls a 10% grade at 18mph or goes down a grade slowly. If a truck is traveling at 65mph on a 1-2% grade, with a speed limit of 75mph, the driver probably has the throttle floored just so they can maintain speed. People get upset because they don't know why this truck is going so slow and holding them back. Then they pass and cut off the truck driver. If the truck driver lets off the throttle so the car can pull in, he may lose 5mph and take 3 or 4 miles to get back up to speed. Then the truck driver gets mad at the whole world and takes it out the next vehicle. A professional driver will not let it bother him and take it in stride.
