I was describing my first semi-fast car in another thread, and thought maybe it would be a fun topic (hopefully not a repeat). So, what was your first cool car? I bought a 1972 Chevelle and thought I was pretty cool. I put a Quadrajet 4 Barrel and dual 2 inch exhaust on it. It had 336 rear end gears, and even though it wasn't really all that fast, I could fry the rear tires for about 100 feet with it. It made a Chevy man out of me.

Hardly a hot rod, but I bought an '81 Chevy Malibu (close relative of the Chevelle, by the way) when I was 19. It had the F41 suspension (lower, and a meatier stabilizer bar up front and one in the back, beefier brakes, etc.). 2 door, bucket seats, console, landau roof. I yanked the tired 305 and dropped in a complete 327 turbo fire (235 HP) from a '63 split window coupe Corvette. Alas, I ran out of money. Too expensive for me at that time to have a project car, so I was using it as a daily driver also. I was faced with decisions like "Hmm, do I buy that stall torque or replace the front brakes?" Luckily my reasonable side would win and I never got to spend money on the fun stuff.

I had a 1971 Olds 4-4-2 convertable. I know nothing about gears and all (not a "gearhead") but it had 455/4bbl/3-speed hurst.

Sadly, wasn't the W-30 variant. Some MORON hit it broadside.

Does a Chevy long bed pick up count w/454..w/4 barrel..way to much power for a country dirt road. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

A '66 427 435hp black on black Corvette two top Roadster. Complete with the GM offroad package that included triple 2bbl Holleys, Muncie M-22 rock crusher tranny and headers that exited under the front fenders and dumped into 4" collector sidepipes. Tach that sucker up and dump the clutch, you didn't need a seat belt 'cause your a-hole puckered and formed a suction on the seat bottom. Out of all the toys I ever had, that's the only vehicle that I regret that I sold. There have been 2 other Vettes, used and new, a brangy-new 911 Porshe non-turbo Carrera with the whaletail and the blown out rear fenders, and numerous Harleys..but nothing matched that '66.

Being that I'm only 25 :) When I got my learners permit in '92 I bought a 93 Jeep Wrangler and in '94 I bought a Mustang GT. Then I bought an '86 Toyota truck to get me though college. Then I bought a 99 Civic Si. Then a 2000 Toyota Tacoma (rolled it over...it didn't handle as well as the Civic ;) ). Replaced that with a 2000 Dodge Dakota R/T (put a 11 # of boost with a supercharger in that). Ended up with my first real "hot rod". A 98 Camaro SS w/ 2500 miles on it. Now that I have the two kids I'm back to two Jeep Cherokees :)

Well my first was a 75 Chevy monza, with a small block v8 in it. Pretty crude, and felt faster then it was. Then moved on to my 70 Mustang that we still have. Started out as a street car, then a drag car. After a few years of turning mid 12's, we parked it, and put the motor in my truck. Now motors back, and we are doing a full resto on it. I also now have my LTD convertible that I will be building a 460 for.

I don't think this qualifies as a hot rod, but I bought my first car when I was 16, in 1970. It was a 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spring GT. It had a frozen engine and I paid a whopping $250 for it. A new piston & sleeve, gasket set and valve job and it was alive. It was a heck of a car for that day - 1600 CC, 4 cylinders, DOHC, aluminum block, aluminum hemi head, dual 2 barrel webers, 5 speed, 4 wheel disk brakes. I had lots of fun and got in lots of trouble with it. My wife never got to ride in it - I sold it to pay for the ring. In the late 80's, I drove past an identical one parked at an apartment complex twice a day for a couple of years. I was real proud of my self restraint in not even stopping to ask how much.
