Went to school 1-3 in Olympia. Dont remember the name. Do remember recess though.
Usuall only 4 things happened at recess.
1. Hopscotch.... mostly girls
2. Jump rope.... mostly girls
3. Tetherball.... we had about 4-6 poles to use.
4. Soakum (now called dodgeball). Mostly boys but also some adventurest girls. Was my favorite.

My first grade teacher took us on a field trip. Walked us up to a train station and took us on a short train ride to her parents farm. Remember playing in the barn jumping into the hay pile.

Oh, that treatise on "shinny" brought back so many memories. I especially like the description of the playing field of the thinly covered flint rocks and oh, don't forget the wasps in the outdoor toilet.. Yep, Met a lot of them things. If you got down in the middle of the merry go round to push it and fell, you better hope you could clear the bars else it drug you over the flint rocks. I saw some real blood and gore a time or two. I had brains enough to not get down in the middle of that death machine. Did you all play "bailout" on the swing sets too? We did. I never broke anything, because I bailed out during a low point of the swing. I saw some gutsy kids bail out higher. I saw some broken arms too.

It was fairly common in "the day" to talk about an old beat up dented car to say "that thing looks like a shinny can".

At least you had a merry go round and swings. I don't recall we had any thing, except maybe a basketball goal.
