My 5105 is only a year old now but I've been completely happy with the paint job, both in evenness and durability. I'm also amazed at how well the paint on the loader bucket is holding up - only a few high wear areas have scraped off, and I've done a LOT of loader work.

Don't get me started on Landpride paint jobs.... my one Landpride implement has a paint job hardly worthy of KK.

All in all pretty satisfied...

They really lay it on too thick too fast (think black) in some areas though, which makes it "too durable"--it comes off in a piece instead of flexing or a small bit coming off. The paint bonds tighter to itself than the metal... a couple thin coats of paint would hold up better I would think... I am wondering if they use a primer or a "self primer".

My mentality switches to rust protection on the tractor though, instead of appearance, and doing what I/we do, paint seems to be "temporary" in areas, and needs to be reapplied.

I agree, the "flimsy plastic" on the "aesthetic" areas of my machine in great--it's shifted a dumpster during plowing even, with barely a scratch on it, and no dent as a reminder--I was pleasantly surprised to see it, and think they are onto something there.:D

The only paint problems I've had is some flaking and cracking on the LX4. The paint on the tractor and loader is great. There is still no rusting on the loader after 3 years of hard work.

You can deter any rust where flaking occurs by putting on Rustoleum Rust Reformer or similar material. This isn't paint. It will deactivate the rust by turning it into black iron sulfide.

The paint job on my 2305 seems real good. I've hauled gravel and concrete chunks in the loader and I can't believe there would be any paint left, but it still looks good. The only places where any paint has chipped off is on the iMatch and the loader. The tractor looks as good as new.

No problems here. I do some pretty rugged full time farm work around here and the paint seems to be holding up well on my 2 yr old investment that includes tractor, tiller, bush hog and FEL. . . many loads of gravel, acres of tilling and MANY acres of mowing.

the one thing that I have noticed about John Deere paints jobs is that on the 5003 series tractors, the rims fade prematurely. i've noticed this on every year model for that particular tractor series. it seems that after buying one of these, that after 100 hours the rims go from yellow to a beige looking color. none of the other JD series models seem to have this problem. anyone else agree with me on this?

Its likley that Deere is not painting the rims in house like they would with the sheet metal. We've had some rims from Titan (who Deere buys tires and rims from) fading in the sun. Adding a coat of spray paint seems to take care of the problem and add a better coat of UV protection than the factory paint job from Titan.

A few comments:

My rims on my 5103 are fading fast and look pretty crummy. It stays covered, too.

I've got a lot of paint chipping off of the top edges of my MX6. Kind of surprising.

The JD Paint on my 2001 4100 has lots of problems:

1. As was stated by another poster, none of the sharp edges of the sheet metal are rolled, hemmed, broken or even really deburred. Any paint will fail at a sharp edge - the stress is magnified immensly - its like taking a knife to the paint and then wondering if a rust line will start there.

2. They don't seem to use a primer that has a lot of zinc. Any little scratch or nick starts a rust spot.

3. The black paint on the grill screens hast just spontaneously rusted over large areas without abuse/damage. Not sure if it was even really paint - probably just a chemically blacking.

4. The paint on my rotary broom 41 decided to just rust from within and come off in large plate-sized flakes.

5. Yellow wheels seem OK.

6. Black parts (axles, transmission, hitch, frame, etc) seem to hold up OK, but I think the dealer hit a bunch of the machine with some after-market touch-up black before I purchased it used.

If I ever sell, will likely look into having it repainted to try and reclaim some value...

Our JD1445 with the 72" 7-iron front-mower is peeling paint all over the place. The paint flakes right off the deck in big chunks. Areas on the floorboard are doing the same thing. The rusted areas that we clean-up, prime and paint each season seem to be lasting longer. The rims are starting to rust too. My older 1070 which puts up with more 'abuse', fertilizers and chemicals, would be expected to rust away quicker, but not the newer mower. My older JD gear drive 54" walkbehind mower still looks brand new.

On my 2520 I'm mostly happy. The wheels however are disappointing as after everytime I wash the machine there is a little puddle of rust stain at the bottom. I tried talking to my dealer about it but got nowhere.
