I think beginning shooters should have a .38 Special revolver, 6" barrel, adjustable sights, as their first handgun.

A semi-auto has too complicated a manual of arms for a beginner.

.38 Special ammo is relatively cheap, full wadcutters have practically no recoil and .38 Specials can be reloaded cheaply with lead bullets.

Revolver with 6" barrel is less likely than 4" or 2" to be pointed in a dangerous direction.

It is an easy transition to .357 Magnum from .38 Special.

I would not give anyone a Gov't Model .45ACP as a first handgun. It does not have a magazine safety and it is too easy for beginning shooters to forget there is a round in the chamber when the magazine is out.

I would also say a .40 cal. Get a .40 cal Hi Point and have enough left in the budget for 500 rounds of ammoo. I know they aren't sexy, but they work every time, and have a great warranty.

Heck, get the .40 cal pistol, the carbine, and 500 rods for the budget...

Sure does look like a great deal on all their guns....lifetime warranty like S&W....I will keep them in mind...

Look at the Buckmark .22 from Browning. Very nice pistols. If you going with a centerfire get a Glock 19. If you want to go "old school" look at shows or shops and get a older S&W blued revolver in .22 or .38. Very nice workmanship on those.

For a .22 semi auto, plinking and small game, my vote goes to Ruger for overall quality, I own both Ruger and Browning Buckmark.

My carry gun is a Sig P229 in .40 DA/SA trigger with short reset mod. However, for a lot less money, a real sleeper is the FN P-40, really a nicely done gun straight out of the box, good trigger, stone reliable.

He comes out here all the time to help us out and will be spending all his weekends here until the wedding in August.

Is he also a Texas resident? If not, he has to get it from or through a dealer in his state.

I have to say I love my sigs. I have the 239 and 226, both in .40 Both nice to carry and shoot. I have the .22 slide for the 226 and it makes practice less $$.

Forgeblast,

I have the .22 slide for my P226 (along with threaded barrel for suppressor :c). Did have to so some work on the extractor, as the slide would not go fully into battery as stock. Also, a shame they don't provide a mag with slide lock open on last shot. Another story.

As to revolver to "keep it simple" . . . I was a cop in Oakland through the 70's. Back then, we could only carry revolvers and when I joined you had to buy your own. Talk about being outgunned by the bad guys! Six in the gun and twelve on the belt - - sheesh. I did carry a PPKS .380 on my ankle, in violation of dept rules and nobody, not even at line up inspection, would *dare* to check for that - - they all knew some of us did that, to do otherwise was just plain stupid.

Anyone, even a newbie to guns, with an ounce of mechanical aptitude should be able to master the safe and reliable operation of a semi-auto with no problems. Then, before carrying it or using for self defense, go put at least 50 rounds through it and make sure it's stone ***** reliable. No misfires or fail to feeds. If it does, fix it and test again. A good, clean and well lubed semi-auto is *almost* as reliable as any revolver. That *almost* being a very thin advantage to the revolver indeed, and one that in no way justifies putting up with a wheel gun's serious capacity and reloading disadvantage. I know of no law enforcement agency in the USA that still uses revolvers - - and there's good reason for that. 'Course there may be exceptions, I just don't know of any.

I have 2 Rugers, an SR22 and an LCP .380 that I carry. Very happy with both of them.
