Interesting thread as I am in the market for a new splitter. My 15 ton DR dual action has handled some large maple but most of my wood in under 16" in diameter (ash, birch, maple, oak). But it is so **** slow! What I am thinking about is the trade off between a larger tonnage unit with a 4 way, or a fast cycling splitter with a 2 way. I definitely want a stationary wedge so the ram pushes the splits off the table. I do not split a lot of wood that is under 6" as it burns fine once I have a bed of coals. Looked at the DR Rapid Fire, but on another thread it did not get good reviews.
Certainly cannot ever imagine needing a 40T unit with what I see in this area but if most of the wood was large enough for a 4 way and cycle time is decent it could be a good choice.
