Interesting thread as I am in the market for a new splitter. My 15 ton DR dual action has handled some large maple but most of my wood in under 16" in diameter (ash, birch, maple, oak). But it is so **** slow! What I am thinking about is the trade off between a larger tonnage unit with a 4 way, or a fast cycling splitter with a 2 way. I definitely want a stationary wedge so the ram pushes the splits off the table. I do not split a lot of wood that is under 6" as it burns fine once I have a bed of coals. Looked at the DR Rapid Fire, but on another thread it did not get good reviews.

Certainly cannot ever imagine needing a 40T unit with what I see in this area but if most of the wood was large enough for a 4 way and cycle time is decent it could be a good choice.

Instead of 40 ton,, maybe 40 horsepower would be better??

First and only thing that I consider when buying anything with a small engine is if it's a Honda or not. If it's not a Honda engine, I wont buy it.

Just picked up a County Line 25 ton splitter yesterday. They were on sale for Black Friday at $800. They still are actually. Gave it a good workout yesterday on my pile of rounds that I’ve been dreading going after with a splitting axe. Made easy work of some monstrous maple and oak rounds. Totally happy with it.

my understanding is that County Line (as with other splitters) was originally made by Speeco. glad to hear you're pleased with the product, & thanks for the feedback in my decision to purchase a County Line splitter.
... i do like heavy duty field tested equip, cheers

One thing they did right on that 40 ton splitter: they matched it with a good sized & good quality engine (14 HP Kohler Command Pro) and large enough hydraulic pump (2 stage, 25 GPM) to get a decent cycle time out of their 5.125" cylinder. So many manufacturers put on a big cylinder, so they can advertise large splitting force, but then hobble it with an undersized motor and pump to save cost.

I just recently purchased a splitter for my father. After watching some YouTube videos of 25 ton units busting up stuff larger than what he needs to be handling, I saw no need to go larger.

My father bought one of those years ago to complement the hydraulic unit that he made to go behind his tractor. The first time he tried it was on a big piece of yellow birch; the wedge corkscrewed in and jammed, bending that bar on the bottom which is supposed to keep the log from turning. After messing with it for a while he gave up; the last time that I saw that splitter he was headed for the barn with the chunk of birch still attached. I don't know what happened to it or if he ever got the stick of wood off; but I never saw that splitter again.

the large Kohler & fast recycle @ 25gpm is what caught my attention on that model splitter as you well point out
