We have always had cats since I was a kid. Cats do a good job of dealing with rats and mice in New England. All of our cats have been strays, or the kittens from strays. We neuter/spay the strays. We find that once a group settles in, it is pretty stable- no new additions. We use a double cat door into the house. We feed our 2 fighting males outside (and they stay out), but the others come and go as they want. They never mess in the house- always go outside. We only use a cat box when one is too old to get around. Our cats will meet us at the car and walk us in to the house. They will walk with us to feed the horses, and go for walks with us to the back field. Cats show gratitude when helped out. Here is one (Angel)View attachment 310517 we found as a kitten in an old shed- and another who showed up as an adult male (Sneakers).View attachment 310518

There are several feral cats around here, and no shortage of birds and squirrels either. Couple winters ago one started hanging around on the patio, I made it a box bed to keep out of the cold and rain. Turns out it was a female who had kittens across the street. I kidnapped them at about two weeks old and raised them inside, since mama had eventually gotten to where she'd come inside to eat. Kept these two and found a good home for the others with someone I know.

I hate cats, and have seven of them hanging around my property.

One is in the house, in his own room, full time. Started off as an adoption some 12 years ago. Personally I cannot wait until he passes. He hates me, and I hate him back.
Over time, I have come to the conclusion that I value my time more so than using it tending to animals. Especially, cats. The one, meowing at me from the other room, in particular.

I heard that a cat will only meow to a human.

Ok, then taking matters a step further, trapping, relocation, humane population control. Guess it is all on the land owner or community, then.

Trapping and relocating any wild animal is illegal in Virginia I have been told by the animal control folks. They can however be trapped, neutered and released where they were trapped. Many however are put down due to feline leukimia and some other disease whose name I can't remember right now which is apparently running rampant in the feral population. The animal shelter here won't have anything to do with them.
