I'm sure all modern browsers are using at least 1.1 by now, but I'd be curious to know what versions are being used by Netscape 4.7/Mac and IE5/Win, since the difference between those two is night and day.

It would be more useful to examine the version of HTTP supported by the server. I'm almost certain that any browser above 4 (Internet Exploder or Netscrape) supports HTTP 1.1+. It's usually the servers that get in the way by not supporting the later protocols.

Have fun in the hills Harv! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.... I know I'm getting a little seat time today! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

With this new server, I find I can run through all the forums in just a few minutes. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I end up spending less time at TBN, because it all goes so quick. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Maybe I'll have to compensate by coming here more often./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

GlueGuy, y'all could double your time by doubling your posts! That'd burn up another 30 seconds or so now-a-days! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird,

For years we connected at 14K (At the time we had a 14K modem). We decided to get a 56K modem and 'go to town' (back when 56K boards were only $100.00). We did the upgrade and were then able to connect at a whopping 16K (on a good day mabe 18K).

I went through all the "try this - Try that" stuff your carrier does and once we were able to get 24K. But usually only 16 or 18K. . . . .until. . . . we noticed at the end of our neighbors driveway,. . . . . was a AT&T truck and backhoe putting in an automated relay station. I guess they use fiberoptic from there on in cause since they finished work (took about 2 months from groundbreaking) we connect at nothing less than 48K, and typically 52K. TBN is like lightening now. (Don't blink. . . . you'll miss something) Our carrier gets 12.99 a month unlimited.

Good luck

Steve

Steve; You're lucky! I have a neighbor who installs lines for Verizon (aka Bell Atlantic). Was talking to him last week on why we are in the dark ages: no DSL service, no ISDN service, connections only at 28.8. He said that they stopped extending services for a variety of reasons. Most notably because of the profitability of wireless: no lines to lay, just activate.

Yep, Steve, I'd say you're lucky and I'm envious; 26.4 is tops for me.

You made me wonder... sure, I was impressed by the speed increase, but it wasn't quite so dramatic as some have been saying. I thought the exagerating had gotten a little out of hand. When you started discussing the technical differances, I decided to try it out.

Netscape 4.77 - much faster site, very nice.

IE 5.00.2920.000 - "seems" (don't have an actual way to quantify) to be around 2-3 times faster than the Netscape.... hmmm

No doubt about it. THis new server is like lightning compared to the old one. The new one will display a whole thread of a forum in a lot less than a second when I'm on a fat pipe. At home it's not too much slower. When displaying the forum home, the old server could take 30-45 seconds regardless of the pipe. Now, it takes only 1 or 2 seconds. Majorly noticeable in my book.

Muhammad,

I got the double whammie this week. You got the new server and I installed a DSL modem at the same time. Boy, what a change! I am now thinking about headers and a high rise for the Kubota./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Excellent!

There is one problem. Used ta' be I'd get some work done waiting for the server to respond. Now it's TOO quick! It's TBN TBN TBN all the time! I guess I'll logoff now so I can get some work done /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
