ROPS on a zero-turn mower is a two edged sword. On one hand, ROPS can grab a tree limb and flip you over in a split second which is extremely dangerous. On the other hand if you do roll over without the ROPS up you could be more injured or killed. Which is the greater risk depends on the property you are mowing.

We keep the ROPS down 100% of the time on our mowers. Too many trees, guy wires, etc. where we live.

Another detail missing. Was it a residential zero turn? I have a commercial grade zero turn for my personal use.
