Zero turn mowers on hills

I don't know about using a compact 4x4 to mow slopes. I used to have a Massey that would basically make my hair stand up if I attempted to mow on much of a slope.

I don't have any trouble using a B2710 (compact 4x4 tractor) to mow slopes up and down. It has to be in 4wd going down or it won't stop (BTDT). The same hill I have to back down and drive up with the Kubota zero turn mower. The B2710 has turf tires.

My ZT is great for mowing and I wouldn't trade it for relatively flat mowing with lots of trees and stuff to get around, but on my septic mound you cannot back up the hill, period, wet or dry, so I've developed a routine that keeps me clear of obstacles near the bottom and I go forward all the time unless I'm on top. My best friend mows about twice what I do ( I mow a little over an acre), he uses a ZT and a front mount, the front mount is bigger but still kicks butt on the ditch slopes, which thankfully I don't have. He also uses his 4300 JD with 72" finish pto mower sometimes, depending on how neat or fast he wants to get done.

Is the rear finish mower faster or neater?

I am talking about going across a slope not up or down one.

I am talking about going across a slope not up or down one.

I have gone cross slope with the B2710 but feel a lot safer going up and down it. The zero turn, OTOH, will lose control going across and turn itself downhill.

Every tractor has it's limits. Thankfully, I've never actually found the limits on my equipment :thumbsup:

Not sure if it was mentioned, but those who want to use a zero turn on hills might consider the TED brake. They seem to work, and could very well save your life if your rears lost traction on a hill.

I don't really have many hills that would be helpful on, but I'd never even thought about how dangerous that is!
