I have a zg23 and i was wondering if there is another engine that can be installed? It has the kohler ch23s-pa76582 that is nolonger working. Is there a newer type engine for it, can i put a kawasaki? Just looking for options for zg23.

Sorry I don't have a response to your question. I am just looking at purchasing a ZG23 with the Kohler engine so your post is of great interest.

What do you think happened to the engine? How many hours?

I have the ZG23 on a demo, the engine seems to have some troubles but I think most of them are related to needing plugs, filters, and so on. I did notice some dirt around the air intake (inside the air filter), so wonder if you had that trouble?
