I can't win with this G1800. The fuel pump failed last week. During the first mowing after replacing that, now the alternator is seized up :mad::mad:

List price is a whopping $202 !!!

Any pointers on where to get a rebuilt, or even a used one for a bit less?

I found one site that lists this as the same alternator for the following:

What does it look like? Is it a dynamo with an external voltage regulator or an actual alternator. I recently upgraded my '92 B2150 to a 40 amp alternator and I still have the little 12-13 amp dynamo I took off. I don't have my parts list with me so I can't give you the stock number of mine right away.

It looks like this, only mine is painted Kubota grey:

Here is another view from an ebay listing:

'

The whole outside part behind the pully (with the letters IMP on it, in the picture) turns with the pully.

According to Messick's list, the one from your B2150 is the same one.
How much do you want for it?

Thanks,
Jay

Iowa Motor Parts sells replacement bearings for this model alternator:
Kubota Alternators

Has anyone here rebuilt one of these? I haven't tried to take it apart yet, but it seized suddenly. I was mowing one minute, the next, there was a horrible squeal, and the alternator light came on.

I immediately shut it down to investigate. I assumed that the belt was about to break. When I restarted it to drive it back over to the garage, the belt did break. Upon further investigation, the alternator is difficult to turn, but not completely locked up, so maybe, for $12 worth of replacement bearings (the above website says it takes three of the bearings shown).

Thanks,

I took my alternator apart today. The previously "sealed" bearings are toast. One fell apart as I removed it. The two on the rotor are frozen on to it. I'm not sure out to get them off yet. The rotor is kinda like a cup with magnets around the inside of it, and a shaft running through the middle. The bearings are stuck on the shaft, down in the cup, so it will be tough to get them out.

If I can get the bearings out, I'll rebuild this one to keep as a spare (or use it if I get it back together before the one I'm buying arrives).

Have seen some of the Kubota Dynamo take offs on ebay in the $60 range. When people were upgrading there BX tractors to the 40A alternator and were left with the dynamo and regulator.

Great thread. I just replaced the bearings on my Dynamo for a Kubota G1800. The parts diagram said three bearings, but there were only two when I took it apart. Not sure? ? Prett easy and $7 per bearing from local Kubota dealer who had them in stock. Cleaned up bearing surfaces with emery cloth and used light weight oil to get them to go in easily.

Some pictures since those are better than words.

First picture you are looking at the plate (opposite side from stator) and can see the new bearing in the bottom of the dynamo already installed. The bushing and 2nd bearing in the picture go on top of the already installed bearing. You tap the bearing in until it rests against the lip in the hole.

Second picture. Both bearings and bushing installed.

third picture. Bearing installed on stator side.

fourth picture: Back together. Washer, lock washer, and nut rest on top of bearning. Bearing is pressed unto lip inside plate.
