Hi! I have just taken ownership of a 1973 Deere 2030 and I have a few questions Ive been unable to answer.

1. Ignition positions. There is 1 click to the left and 4 clicks to the right. No problems operating with lights on/off, just curious what all the positions are for and do.

2. PTO - I know its a live PTO, but are there any controls like gearing for it? My last tractor had this and other tractors I have used do as well. ? I had read that the yellow knobbed lever in between the shifters was PTO control but when I move the lever up and down there is no change to anything I can tell.

3. Park. I see the P on the shifter, but it really does not seem to click or bump into or seat itself in any way when I attemp to put the lever there. If I were to find this P position, what gear should the other be in? 1st? On a tractor this size is it safe to park it in R - 1 or L - 1 or will that break the transmission? How to park properly is a concern...

4. There is a foot lever on my left side back a bit that swings another lever out from the center. Is this a diff lock or something like that?

Thanks for any info! 12425DDC-F573-457E-9D8F-CFF9463572DC.jpegEBB5DFE7-C5B1-48FF-8CA8-039AFB58372E.jpeg

Welcome to TBN
1st question are you referring to ign or light switch? If you're referring to light switch then IIRC W=warning,B=bright,D=dim, F=field. question 2 lever by operators left heel when sitting in seat must be forward for pto to engage. question 3 gearshift lever 1-2-3-4 must be engaged in any one of the 4 speeds before other lever will go into park. question 4 lever furthest back on LH side is diff lock.

Thx! Sorry I’m referring to the key actually. I have no markings. Insert key it’s center upright like vertical. It will then go one click left or 4 clicks right. 4 and 3 seem to both be lights and run, 2 no lights and run, not sure on 1. Never seen a key have so many positions!

Not sure what you’re talking about under my left heel. Gonna go look.

So what about the yellow knob lever in between the shifters?

Photo below shows light switch for 2030 that I remember when I sold 2030's when they were new. 2nd photo is pto shaft disconnect lever(key 1) that I stated was "by left heel" not under left heel. You previously stated you knew that lever with yellow knob between gear shift levers was for pto so I didn't mention it but yes forward engages pto & rearward disengages pto. On subject of ign switch key straight up is off, left of straight up is accessories, 1st position to right of straight up is "ign on", then next position is "start" which is spring loaded. I don't remember seeing an ign switch for JD 20-55 series utility tractors with 4 key positions to the right BUT I have "Oldtimers disease" LOL. Can you please post a photo of the backside of ign switch?

I was employed at a JD dealership from '66-'87

Does your serial number end in "L" or "T" that might make a difference for the key switch.
I have not tried to turn my key switch to the left, only right to ON, and "more right" to START, which is spring loaded back to ON.

Flat steel lever on left side mechanically engages the PTO shaft to drive shaft with a shift collar inside the case. Forward to engage

Yellow knobbed lever between shifters engages the hydraulic PTO clutch to cause the PTO shaft to turn. forward to engage

MY 2030 (1974) has to be in 1st gear to put it in PARK. The 1 -4 shift lever hits a spring loaded lever, in key 2 of the drawing, that opens up a spot for the Range- Park lever to engage. There is a spring inside the large diameter part of the Range - Park lever that lets it bend to engage the Park position.

Thanks. Park is solved. Photo here of the key housing from back side. I still cannot affect the PTO so I’m assuming something is broken in this regard. I made a lil video just now to show. PTO test - YouTube
