2007 Tundra vs F250 5.4

Congrats on the new truck. As many have noted, diesels are slow empty, but don't get much slower when fully loaded. Our Ram/Cummins won't win at the dragstrip, but can pull 10k lbs without working hard or being slow.

so, yesterday, while hauling my 4500lb dump trailer with about 8,000lbs of poop in it, I passed this truck towing a skidsteer.
This skidsteer was a typical skidsteer (not the huge big ones, a regular 5' skidsteer) on an equipment trailer. I figure it weighed probably 6000lbs plus the trailer probably weighed 2000lbs (it was not heavy enough trailer to be hauling this, but that's a side note)
It was being towed by a new style tundra. Crew cab, short bed.
It was riding on it's rear bumper, front wheels up in the air, it couldn't handle towing only 8000lbs. (and the SS looked centered on the trailer to me)
i.e. it's a nice half ton, i'ts not a heavy duty (3/4 ton) truck.

LC, anyone dumb enough to put a skidsteer on an undersized trailer probably also doesn't grasp the concept of "weight distributing hitch." I have seen many trucks big enough to handle the trailer they're pulling but pointing to the moon like you describe simply because the truck owner wasn't smart enough to install a weight distributing hitch.

Toyota makes a nice truck. I have never seen a 11000 - 12000 pound capacity goose neck being towed by one. One might wind up with the cart before the horse.

Does not take much to make them go if you want fast. Read some months ago in a Diesel Power type magazine. Guy had a '01 Cummins Ram running high 10's in the 1/4 mile. Totally streetable, 20+mpg on the highway. With a 6800lb pickup...

First off, this subject has been beat to death. If you need an hd truck to tow then get one if you need a 1/2 ton for daily driving and a bit of towing now and then fine. But Your comparing apples to oranges here. Sure all the makes are boasting 1/2 tons with ridiculous towing caps but there's a huge difference between being able to tow and being able to tow safely. A half ton doesn't have the HD suspension of the Hd trucks nor the brakes and other components like bearings etc. The engines surely can produce the hp. But Diesels make huge torque and HP low in the rpms compaired to gas. Also the torque is pretty stead throughout the power band. Not so with a gasser. My point here is there's all these post with folks whining about "Why diesel" etc and it's simple to see they aren't buying for their need but for the want of the diesel. If you need a diesel you know it, if you need a more comfortable ride you need a 1/2 ton. Evaluate your needs and go from thier.
If your not sure what your needs are then maybe you need to plan. Both Gas and diesels are purpose specific and if used for their purposes the owners will be happy. Just remember the 80/20 rule. Just my 2 cents!

I was told Toyota is coming out with a 3/4 ton pickup along with a diesel version. I suspect it a year or two down the road.

I did some research with my F250 5.4 and see why it did not pull too well. The 2004 only had 260 hp compared to the Tundra's 381. The 5.4 had 350 foot pounds vs 401 for the 5.7 Tundra. The towing capacity for a F250 gas was only 6900 pounds where the Tundra was 10,300.

The 6 liter diesel has some better specs but not that far ahead of the 5.7. I was looking at an 06 F250 so it would still have had the 6 liter. It had 350 hp with 550 pounds of torque. A 150 foot pound torque spread between a gas and diesel is not all that bad. The towing capacity on the diesel was 12,500 compared to 10,300 for the Tundra. The actual vehicle weight of the gas version F250 was less than 400 pounds heavier than the Tundra.

I realize I keep switching from gas to diesel which is apples and oranges for the most part. But for my needs the gas will work out. If I pulled very frequently I would have gone with the diesel. I just wanted to let the the diesel people know that there may be a gas engine biting at their heels.

I know the F250 diesel will pull better because it has more torque, a heavier frame and better tires. But as for stopping, the Tundra has bigger brakes that any 3/4 ton on the road (however on a large load there may not be enough truck there to handle the big stops).

My GF just bought the Tundra. It's a cool truck and she likes it..I like it all happy with it.
One thing on the rear end, it may have a 10.5" ring gear and all that but it is still a 5 semi-floating rear end.
I know GM and Dodge use American Axle 11.5" full floating rear end...big difference.

The Tundra is still a half ton with all the half ton stuff...still a good truck, I like it.
If they build a 3/4 ton like they did this 1/2 ton then it should be a contender with the other three.....but if they don't offer a standard tranny they will never sell me one.

I am not sure where you got your numbers but my 2004 f-250 short bed diesel 4x4 weighs 7,500# with me in it an 3/4 fuel. My 2006 f-350 short bed diesel 4x4 weighs about 7,700# with me in it and 3/4 fuel. Your are correct on the 12,500# tow limit but that is on the bumper. For a 5th wheel or goose neck it is more in the 16,000# plus range and can reach as high as 24,000# in the new F-450 power stroke. I agree the Toyota truck is a nice rig but its a 1/2 ton. Like stated before I am a Ford Guy but I would surly take a good look at a Toyota or Nissian Diesel 1 ton 4x4.

Diamondpilot:

I was weighing in the 5.4 gas version which I'm sure weighs substantially less than a diesel. I was taking my figures from the Ford specs.
