Ouch! Brutal. Oh well, I asked...albeit apparently a bit late.
Jesse1, as apparent with a used vehicle, I cannot be one hundred percent positive the truck has never had a tuner on it but I did speak with the only other owner of the truck. He is an older fella and he claims he never need one and he traded it for a new '08 Ford 6.4 due to their "closeout" price. He now claims that he wish he hadn't traded because he says he lost almost 5 mpg by going with the brand new 6.4 which, to my surprise, has already been dropped by Ford. Ford scrapped the 6.4 in even shorter order than they scrapped the 6.0! I'm told by Ford that by early 2009 they will come out with what they will call a 2010 year model that will have a 6.7 liter diesel in it. That means the 6.0 ran from '03 to '07 and the 6.4 will only be used in '08 and '09 model year trucks; giving it only half of the production time as the 6.0.
What is a guy to do now for a heavy duty diesel pickup?? I'm serious. A good friend of mine owns at least one GM franchise, Ford franchise and Dodge franchise. He tells me to avoid the new units at all costs due to the particulate and emission systems that make them, in his words, 'junk'. I bought the newest diesel pickup that I actually liked that was pre-particulate filter and it sure seems to be junk compared to my 10 year older Dodge (actually 11 years older going by their build dates). I did consider the GM with the D'max, but I just plain didn't like the truck. I prefer the ride, drive and styling of my old Dodge compared to them and, according to the service managers I know, they too have their share of issues along with the same "I hate it!!" comment about the brand new version of the GM pickups; which I do like styling, ride and drive wise.
Dang this sucks! I find it hard to believe that the only really good diesel trucks (that all service managers seem to agree on) is the older model Cummins 5.9 trucks and the older 7.3 Ford trucks; but the 7.3's are now old enough that they mostly seem prone to transmission issues (which takes about 6 grand to have a really strong replacement installed) and other various fuel problems. It is disheartening to hear about the newer diesel pickups available. It makes me wonder if the only answer now is to buy the biggest gas engine available and accept far diminished towing capabilities and even worse fuel economy.
