so how do you tell the build date by the SN?

Here is some info I copied from the John deere 455 spec sheet.The last 6 digits will tell you what year it is.
I drove 100 miles, to check out an original owner 455, only to find that the complete tag was missing.
I wasn,t a happy camper, and let the owner know that I wasn,t interested in his tractor.
455 Serial Numbers:
1993: 010001
1994: 020001
1995: 030001
1996: 040001
1997: 050001
1998: 060001
1999: 070001
2000: 080001
2001: 090001

Tractor was probably hot. Is there a "crime stoppers" to call and say there is a suspicious 425 for sale?

Actually, it was owned by a fireman, that was getting a divorce, so i chuckled at your hot comment.. .
I didn,t get the feeling that it was hot, but I did get the feeling he was trying to hide the year of it, so then of course, I became suspicious about the hours on the hour meter, so I just decided to pass on it. I,m 65 years old, and my word and my reputation means a lot to me, and our family. I don,t really care to get mixed up in other peoples problems, just to save a few bucks.
