My '03 has a few years left in it; and I can wait for the engineers to get back on track with newer diesel designs that will allow consistent, 20+mpg highway mileage (once again..).

I've got two 96 Dodge Cummins 2500s; 1 an automatic with the DTT tranny (160K miles) and the other a 5 speed (91K miles). Both get slightly better than 20mpg unloaded, 17mpg towing heavy.

I also plan to wait for better mileage out of the new diesel truck(s), probably for the rest of my life. I don't think I'll ever wear out these Dodge Cummins.

Good rigs! Only one of 'em even close to 1/2 way to replacement...

I'm waitin' on the major Auto manufacturers to be "reorganized". Then I'll be able to buy a Cummins powered, Allison 6sp tranny, KingRanch Crew Cab body and running gear -- new, 2012 truck! :D :D

I've driven the 96 auto twice up to Alaska and all around the state incl. up to the Slope. Never had a problem, but it was during May through September both times so the weather wasn't too bad.

Seems like the key to survival for the automatics in the Cummins powered Dodges is to not modify the engine for more power.

I've known a lot of guys who have been through 3-6 transmissions if they're even slightly modified.

I want a factory exhaust brake, so a 6.7L may be in my driveway for my next truck if GM doesn't offer one the next time around.

There are 3 or 4 after market tranny guru specialists for the Dodge transmission who build a really excellent transmission... torque convertor, valve body and clutches. These trannys can hold a lot of torque.

When I added power to some of my Ford diesels, i used to buy aftermarket transmissions from BTS. I remember Suncoast being another dealer. My Ford diesel truck transmissions couldn't hold 20 extra HP without slipping. :(

I picked up a 2500 4X4 diesel last month with the 6spd auto. Power will never be an issue again. Check out www.cumminsforums.com for the scoop on mods, performance upgrades, etc... Pretty informative.
