For years I have bought square drive stainless steel screws from McFeely's online. They are high quality. I used thousands of 3 1/2" screws on a treated yellow pine deck in coastal Virginia. No pilot hole, no stripping, no breakage. Sometimes if the torque gets really high the screw will corkscrew a bit but never had one break. Using a Makita 18v impact driver. Sometimes it got too hot to hold but never gave any problems. Watching those screws just melt into the wood with so little physical effort, a huge difference from any other way I know of.
