Congrats on the tractor. How do you like the dual speed hydro?

Congratulations. I'm at about 325 hours on my 5240 and it has been perfect.

Well, folks, to close out this thread, I wanted to let everyone know where I ended up on this issue. After a lot of searching and number crunching we determined that we would buy used instead of new. I sold my JD 4720 to a gentleman from Malibu, CA and shipped it across country. We found a very nice, lightly used 2012 Kubota L5740 cab tractor at a dealer in New York state and were able to make a deal with them and paid considerably less than we had planned to on a new tractor. With what we saved, we are now planning to purchase a third, and slightly larger tractor but probably won't do so until after the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY next February.

The Kubota had 105 hours on it when we picked it up about three weeks ago and it now has 185 hours on it so yes, we've been working it pretty hard and I'm not disappointed in the least. This week I pulled a disc through heavy clay topsoil for 5 hours on a hot day at 2500 rpm and the AC stayed ice cold and the machine didn't overheat at all. Sorry, but my Deere crapped out on that same challenge twice this season. It was a good tractor for light duty but just not cut out to bust a gut in the dirt.

I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts on this thread. I got very good input and through all of that ended up with a strategy and a tractor that works for us. It pays to ask questions!

Congrats on the new (to you) tractor!

Wasn't the 4720 right around the same HP and size as the L5740? I'm curious to hear your overall review and comparison between the two (comparing things like loader, comfort, features, quality, etc)

The 4720 was 66 HP vs. 60 HP for the L5740...but the Kubota is stronger in virtually every way. The dual speed, three range hydro will allow me to do things that I could not do in my John Deere. For example, I can climb a fairly steep hill with my 2000 lb. Kasco Eco Drill in Mid Range by downshifting to low (turtle) when the tractor starts to run out of steam...and, I can do it on the fly. In my JD, I had to stop and shift into Low. On once occasion, the Deere stalled on me and before I could grab the parking brake it rolled back into a tree and damaged the drill. Plus, the Kubota just plain takes a licking and keeps on ticking no matter what you throw at it...and the A/C ALWAYS blows ice cold. It may not be as "pretty" as the JD, but I'm over my Green Paint fetish. I couldn't be happier with the Kubota. In fact, I'm considering buying an M7040 for the really heavy duty work, like pulling a 2600 lb power harrow. I've become a believer in the engineering behind that ugly orange paint. LOL!

Sorry, I missed part of your question. As far as the loader, there is no comparison. The L5740 with the LA854 loader will lift a pallet of fertilizer with ease. My John Deere loader would not even create separation between the pallet and the floor. Now, as far as comfort, again, there is no comparison and here the John Deere wins out, hands down. The air ride seat, the tightly sealed cab, great stereo and A/C (if it felt like working that day) made the Deere a very comfortable machine to operate. It was a great tractor for light duty work like mowing and spraying and light tiller work in good soil but if you asked it to pull a plow or a disc in heavy clay soil on an 85 degree day it would puke. I'm not badmouthing it, that was simply my experience.

I have said before that there is not a compact tractor that is as productive as a Kubota Grand L because of the dual speed hydro. The orange paint will grow on you. From a safety stand point it is a good color because it does stick out.

That is interesting that the Kubota will out lift the JD. I think the JD is supposed to lift around 600lbs more @ 500mm. Everybody says JD makes the best cabs. Kubota has addressed some of the things you mention on the L60. It was interesting hearing your thoughts on the 2 tractors since you have had real world seat time with them both.

I agree, it's always nice to see a direct comparison from someone owning two competing units.

Two things I wouldn't mind adding to my Massey is the dual speed hydro and the linked cruise control that are featured on the Grand L tractors. Otherwise, I think the Kubota and Massey compacts are at the top of the pile (though I give the slight edge in quality to the Massey :D. )
