In times of turmoil, how would you know whether to shoot someone or not? You might have to make that decision very quickly or risk dying yourself. In Canada, you can't use excessive force. You can't kill someone because they are stealing your generator, and yet, if that is your survival tool, I think one would be justified. The courts wouldn't see it that way though. I hope, I never have to experience that.

That's what the backhoe is for. ;)

Medicine would be a great thing to have. How do you get penicillin legally? How about morphine? Any other emergency drug? Guess I'll stick with ammo. :(

Ask your doctor.

In my definition of a TEOTWAWKI scenario, there won't be any law. The law will be what you say it is. Until society and the rule of law is restored, you will have to do as you see fit. We are not talking about some local or regional disaster here where there is still the rule of law, maybe just not in the area you are in, but a nationwide or even worldwide disaster. TEOTWAWKI

I'd think a freezer will be pretty worthless pretty fast if the social situation gets so bad that power is out for weeks and weeks and people are roaming the land looking to scavenge food. Are you really going to want to use up your precious fuel supply running a freezer? NOPE. Get foods and meds that don't require freezing or refrigeration for that scenario.

Now, if we're talking natural disasters and relatively short-term power outages, it might not be too much of a drain on your resources to keep the freezer running. I count on my freezer to save me money by buying in bulk, or storing home-grown food. But I wouldn't count on it in a social disaster.

Adding it in the sunny area would seem prudent....

I think that without a doubt, that ammunition would always be a good barter item. Maybe that is why .22 rimfire is in such short supply. People hoarding it. I think you are right that money will be a short term answer, but if something happened long term, money would be worthless, but if you had a box of .22 rimfire and a rifle or pistol, you can get small game to feed yourself., and it is better than nothing to defend yourself with. If you are a good shot, you can pop a deer in the head with it too if you get tired of squirrels and rabbits and birds.

.22 rf is in such short supply because 20th century factories are trying to keep up with 21st century 10/22s and mini-14s. New factories and production lines are slowly coming online, so the shortage is easing.

With an energy star chest freezer and a tiny generator, you can keep a freezer cold on a quart of gas a day. 800 watts is plenty to run a freezer. A small lawnmower motor running a GM alternator into a battery with a 1000 watt inverter will run a freezer just fine.
