Maybe IO and TW only set theirs up at 2000 sys press? If so 11hp should run it.

Im guessing the reason they run the bigger motor on the TW6 is so they can run higher pressure on the LP side and HP side. The TW6 is 2 tons more than the tw5 with the same cyl so sys press must be higher. If you have the lp shift point set at 750psi and max press at 3000 your going to need all of 15 and likely 16 hp. The TW6 is 2 seconds faster on the cycle time than the TW5. The 688cc Honda is about 20Hp peak. The way I figure it, ignoring the calculations, that's about what you need if your going to max out the pump on LP and HP and have a bit of fudge factor built in.

The TW-5 is (11hp, 22gpm) listed @ 25 tons with a 5" cylinder. To get 25 tons out of that cylinder requires 2500psi+.

I dont know how they are doing it either. But they are. At only 2500psi, spec calls for just a tad over 11hp with 85% eff.

I wonder if this is one of them cases of differing measurments for HP. (gross, net, sae, din, etc) (you mention the class action suit).

Or maybe HP is just different up there in Canada:laughing:

Maybe you guys use metric horsepower. Cause those metric horses are infact much closer to ponys. Thus, you need to take your metric HP and divide by pi, and then multiply by a constant of 2.5.

So... (14hp/3.14159) x 2.5 and you get the magic 11.15 HP that the math says yours will stall at :laughing:

Maybe you know or not, but most Prince log splitter valves are sold with the relief set at 2250 psi, some are adjustable to 2750, and others can go up to 3500 psi. The potential of going to 3500 psi is used by manufacturers to boost their figures above their competitor.

Energy's log splitter valves are set to 2000 psi + or - 200 psi.

Here are some figures

4 in cyl developing 2000 psi = 12.5T
-----------------------3000psi = 18.8T
----------------------3500 psi = 22T

5 in cyl developing 2000 psi = 19.6T
-----------------------3000 psi = 29T
-----------------------3500 psi = 34T

Someone here on TBN said their log splitter developed 3500psi, and if that is true using a 5 in cyl, then he would be developing about 34T.

Whether your engine can handle that kind of load is the question.

It only takes about 2 HP to pump 1 GPM at a potential of 3500 psi.

As far as who's engine and pump can do what they say, you can always make a video.

Someone here on TBN said their log splitter developed 3500psi, and if that is true using a 5 in cyl, then he would be developing about 34T.

Most likely that was me. Ours is a 4.5" cylinder 27T model. And yes, @ 3500psi it does make the rated tonnage. We did put a pressure guage on it, and when Fully extending the ram and staying on it, it will do 3500psi.

But agree that there is a HUGE web of lies surrounding splitter tonnage ratings.

I even called a customer service rep from northern tool about some of their splitters. Cause (unlike most MFG's) they were kind enough to advertize BOTH their PSI & cylinder size. Numbers were just WAY off. She just said that she wasnt and engineer and didnt know how they came up with the numbers. I tried my best to explain that it was just simple math and not rocket science and that their numbers were clearly false advertisment. And she just kept saying that she didnt come up with the numbers. So I asked to speak with whoever did. She refuesed:laughing:

So NOW, I see that for all their splitters, they list both RAM force (over inflated BS #) and then a few lines down they list "continuous force" which is the actual number.

So that begs the question....how do they come up with ram force???? Does it have to do with how fast the ram travels creating and tad bit of inertia:laughing:
