Simplicity 9518 rebuild

I got to install my ROPS last night. My grandpa made me some brackets that attach to the tranny case to the ROPS. I did have to bore out 1 of the holes but otherwise it worked perfect. It is made of 1/4 inch steel. In the end, my Simplicity looked pretty good. The bottom of the ROPS are a few inches above the fender so i would like to somehow attach them together without lowering the ROPS.

Well, after trying to start my simplicity this weekend, I finally found out why it wouldnt start. My fuel pump was not providing the engine with diesel which is why it wont start or run. I know that fuel pumps are rather dificult to rebuild so we brought it to NewHolland this morning to have a certified mechanic fix it. We loaded it on the trailer by wraping a chain from the bumper of the tractor to the 3 point on the Deere. We jack knifed the trailer so the chain wouldnt hit the truck. Worked pretty well. When we got it there, I found out that one of the mechanics there used to work for simplicity so he knows my tractor inside and out. So this week, my simplicity shall be running once again for the first time in 15 years! Also, i finally got a new seat for it last night so now i can throw out the old one and be comfortable for seat time. Cant wait to bring it home!

Just found out that the new pump will cost $1000 plus labor. Is it worth replacing? I have to sell this tractor so I can upgrade to a larger one. What do I do?

How much did you pay for the tractor to start with?

How much $$ total will you have in it (including the $1,000 fuel pump) when you are done repairing it?

How much can you sell it for after the repairs?


Answer these three questions and it will make your decision a little easier. For instance, if you paid nothing for the tractor and it costs you $1,500 to get it into saleable condition, you had better be able to a couple grand selling it. If not it is just robbing money from your next tractor purchase.

$800 in it so far. Got it for $300. Gonna try and sell it for $1500 obo as a project since I'd only loose $$$ if i replaced the fuel pump. The total for just the fuel pump and labor would be $1400. I could put that $$$$ into a bigger tractor.

Exactly, Now if you fixed it and could sell it for $2500 with the new fuel pump it may be worth it. Just make sure you are not going to lose money on the deal.

I guess sinced i dont have enough $$$$ lying around and not the guarantee that the fuel pump is the only thing broken it makes me think I should use the $$$$ on a bigger tractor. I would only be ahead a few hundred $$$ if I fixed the fuel pump and would loose my savings of $800. So I guess i would loose out on the deal.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good grasp of the situation. That's what I would do too.

Just an idea here but I never bought a pump from a dealer, I always had em rebuilt by a local shop that specializes in such things, have it rebuilt. I dont know what the going rate is now but I dont ever remember a rebuild being more than 500.

I would have the pump rebuilt but most everything on it is bad. I was on ebay last night and found a Massey 1010 (same as 9518) that is being parted out. if i can get a used pump for a lower price i can alternatly save $$$ and sell the tractor for more since it would be in working condition.
