Switching from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive

I have hills and asphalt. Constantly in and out of 4wd.

Caused considerable front axle damage to my L275DT accidentally running in 4wd on asphalt, lesson learned.

This is perfectly normal. If the disconnect clutch has a load on it, it will be difficult to engage. A load results from the tires moving at different rates, especially when turning.

As others have said put a slight pressure on the lever and turn on way or another. You will feel the load dissipate and the lever will easily release.

all the smaller tractors that have a lever to select 2/4wd use a sliding collar for 2wd/4wd selection, there is no clutch. if there was an actual clutch pack it would never have an issue getting it out of 4wd.

Our L5740 is the same way but our JD 7730 has no problem. $115,000 buys you electric shift among a whole lot of other things.
the 5740 is like above but the 7730 uses an actual electro-hydraulic clutch pack to engage 4wd.
