What the deep rip does, is to let the water soak in and not run off causing erosion,--plus making ground more open down deep so roots can go down to moisture !--its kinda like a holding tank for your ground. also lets air down to the deep rooted plants growing on top!--also lets the ground freeze out deeper and kills more bugs/disease/etc.
I pull this 1-shank JD (antique sub soiler) with the Allis 190 xt diesel tractor---gives it a good load in hard ground too!!
