Why are you brand loyal?

/ Why are you brand loyal? #21
Guess my first recollection is of a 1939 used Plymouth. Had many used Plymouths since then. Told my kids I ain't in love with Plymouth, but it's the only thing I can afford. Thus all my kids (4) drove Mopars...225 ...318...360...383...400.....no 440's. Ole Dad could work on all of them. But in the '80s seems like all the dealerships and Dodge/Plymouth/Chysler cars went to hellz.

When that 1980 Dodge 225 slant six truck gave up, I switched to Fords and have been happy ever since....4.6 L 5.0L 5.4L
Cheers,
Mike

My first recollection was my parents' 1936 Plymouth coupe in 1945. Then they moved up to 4 door Plymouths with 5 kids. But in 1952, Dad bought a 1948 Olds 76 and he and mother were Olds or Buick drivers from then on. My own first car was a 1946 Chevy 2 door; 10 years old and upper 90k miles on it when I got it. But over the years I've owned Ford, Mercury, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Studebaker, Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Austin Healy, Isuzu, & Suzuki. I've only gotten one true lemon and that was a new 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 4 door sedan. It was so bad as to be unbelievable and after 2 years and 24k miles, I traded it in on a new Plymouth and for 24 years you couldn't have given me a Ford. But now for the last 23 years, I've owned nothing but Fords. I don't really have any particular brand "loyalty" but I do have a Ford dealer that I like more than the dealers for the other brands in this area.

I don't consider myself brand loyal. I try to stick with products that fit me best and are reliable. I was a ford guy to the core but just got tired of being burned. I had two decent experiances and two lousy experiacned with fmco. I had a lemon 05 F150 lariat that went through 3 transmissions in 7k miles. Then I as told I had to live with a very noticeable hard shifting truck. Lemon law kicked in and I ended up with a F250 Lariat with a 6.0 Diesel, I ended up having the typical 6.0 engine issues and fmco just wrote me and the 6.0 off and was told they weren't spending more time and money on 6.0. And I should buy a new 6.4. At that point I decided to look else where.

I grew up on Fords, even though my dad was dyed in the wool GM. My first Ford was a '53 Victoria 2dr ht flat head 8, then to a '54 Victoria 2dr ht overhead 8, then to a '56 Victoria 2dr ht 8, then to a '62 Galaxy 2dr ht, 406 cu.in., 4speed, then a '64 Fairlane 2dr ht with the miniscule 260" 8. That ended my love affair with Ford and owned a bunch of mongrels including a new '67 Coronet R/T, 440 magnum. My first Ford pickup was a new '75, 300 cu in Ranger, 2 wd, stick with the Ford "better idea", twin "I" beam front suspension. Couldn't keep front tires on it, so sold in less than two years. Back to the mutts, 1 Dodge 318 pickup I drove for several years and another bunch of GM's. Fast forward to the more recent past, I decided to give Ford another chance; a new '05 F150 Lariat, 5.4. Worst mistake I ever made; owned that thing for less than a year and a half, less than 25,000 miles and dumped it. Pretty truck but had no power when hooked to a trailer along with several other issues. Traded that on my '07 Tundra, which I still have with a little over 115,000 miles and hope to get another 115,000 out of it. Brand loyal; I don't think so

I guess I'm anti brand loyal. When I was about 30 years old with a family to support, I had a less than 2 year old GM product that had a two year 24,000 mile warranty. At about 22,000 miles the exhaust system rusted thru, but the dealer refused to repair it under warranty, claiming I didn't drive the car enough. Lacking the resources to fight them, I bit the bullet, and had it repaired all along swearing I would never own another GM product. I traded that vehicle as soon as I could afford it and bought a Chrysler. Since then I have never owned or even looked at a GM product. The Ford products and to a lesser degree the Chrysler products have served me well, and have reasonably stood behind their product. Thus, have had no reason to ever consider a GM product.

starting with my first car, in 1963, I've had:

1959 Impala convertible
1957 VW beetle (I lived in Germany at the time..they were cheap)
1960 VW beetle -in Germany
1959 Mercedes 190 - in Germany
1969 VW squareback
1964 Rambler
1975 Rambler
1972 Datsun PU
1977 Chev PU
1988 Dodge PU, my first new vehicle
1988 Ford Escort
1988 Chrysler Lebaron
1990 Chrysler Imperial - wife's car
1991 Toyota Tercel
2014 Toyota Tundra
2012 Toyota RAV4 - wife's car
2014 Toyota RAV4 - wife's car

notice the last 4 are Toyota's the only brand loyalty I've really had. Unless things change, I'll stick with them. They last...mostly trouble free.

I consider some brands more trust worthy than others not am not going to blinded by any brand. There are certainly brands that I would not buy. ie some of the Chinese tractors out there these days.

. . . .

oldpilgrim, my first car was also a 1959 Chevy Impala, but it was a 2 door hardtop. I bought it in 1969 from my grandmother for $500.

It was 10 years old and had less than 20,000 miles on it. She was, literally, the little old lady that only drove it to the grocery store and church. And the store was 1 block away and the church was about 5 blocks away.

I sure wish I had kept it and taken care of it. They are worth a lot of money today.

I ohauled the engine, and painted it candy apple red. It was a great car. Wish I still had it. I traded it for a diamond engagement ring. The ring is still in use 47 years later.

I like having to deal with the same dealer for all my vehicles. It's more people loyalty than brand loyalty, being called by name when you walk in to the dealership for service or parts. Currently it's GMC and New Holland but my local New Holland dealer dropped New Holland when they went to LS. The closest NH dealer is now 40-50 miles away. So my next tractor probably will be a Kubota, Massey or a Deere as they are the only dealers in town. I will probably stick with GMC as I like the looks of the front clip and the Duramax/Allison combination.
