I've tried twice now to cut a Swale on my property. My back blade doesn't seem to dig and cut into the ground. I believe the problem is the sod. It digs fine in dirt but not where the grass is growing.

Any tips? Should I get a middle busted or something to lossen it up first???

Use the ripper shanks if it's a Box blade

If your rear blade will both angle and tilt, use the corner to break up the sod.

That's what I'm trying to do, and it's not working. I actually "ghost rode" the tractor and stood on the corner of the back blade and my 200# self didn't help much at all

They are not really designed to dig. Try changing the blade rotation angle by adjusting the 3pt top connection to get more aggressive. Grass unless shallow rooted is a problem. Scarf it out with the FEL or a middle buster first. That is what I had to do once. Once you get a spot opened up it goes easier. Been there.

I use my roll over box blade to open new, virgin ground. It has ripping shanks. Otherwise - my 1100# rear blade just skips, bumps, jumps along on virgin ground. My bunch grass can be a real PITA.

What is ghost riding?
Letting the tractor drive itself, without someone in the seat...

Do you have a photo of your rear blade? Does it angle and tilt? Your 3 point hitch should have a leveling feature (one side that can be shorten) usually threaded rod to raise or lower one edge?

Side note: I see you have a ranchex QH that doesn't require the bushings like other QH's. How have you enjoyed it?

I'm going to concur with the recommendation of using something else to start ripping the sod/grass.

Sod/grass is a bit like fabric since all the roots tend to intertwine and create a pretty resilient mesh, and since a rear blade (or even the blade on a box blade) is a bit like a safety/cartridge razor in how it works ....well, you're seeing the issue. So something to tear-through or otherwise cut the roots is needed. Scarficers, rippers, middlebusters, coulters -- really just about anything that primarily shears vertically along a path parallel to the tractor's path should work.

Of course on the flip side once you get the blade under the sod's root layer it'll likely stick together and roll like a fabric as well...

Actually that's how a nearby sod-farm harvests the sod -they have an implement that uses a pair of coulters/disks to cut the width of the strip, combined with a blade sliding under the roots which creates a roll of sod (that looks like a large roll/bale of carpet/paper). That role is then transported and sold as is, or further sliced into shorter lengths.

It's when a cowboy wrangles the devil's heard. Most do it in the sky.
Sorry, I couldn't help it.

OR "Ghost Rider, the pattern is full"... Not that it mattered to Tom Cruise.

And I can't imagine anything ever going "wrong" with that scenario. We read about dead guys on here fairly often...Just saying.. :)
