I'm sort of a captive customer - on an outer island in Hawaii. Only one dealer on my island. I would like to purchase a John Deere 1025r TLB, but there is only one in stock. It is a 2015 and been sitting outside for about six months - in a rainy area fairly close to the ocean. The dealer has offered $800 off due to the age, another $750 off for the JD special Bonus promotion discount for two implements - and the 0%/60 mo. financing.

I am told it would be the end of Sept. if I were to order a new one. That would be four long months looking at chores I needed to do. :(

But, I am concerned about the degree of rust I see in some areas. I am a complete newbie when it comes to tractors, and not all that smart about equipment maintenance and condition. The overall appearance looks good. And it is new - 1.4 hour. But for $25,000 and a new garage to park it in, I was kinda planning on having this for a very long time. Or at least keeping it in good condition - for resale value

What would you do???

If you will be storing the tractor outdoors, in the same conditions, what difference would it make?

If you will be storing indoors, I would order a new one.

I am 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico in humid Florida. My tractor is stored in a humidity controlled garage. The cars are outside in the driveway.

I have been in the shoes of a perfectionist and know you will not be happy with that tractor. Way too much rust to be acceptable. Remember, there are metal and electrical parts under covers and such that probably look about the same. Life is too short to buy what you don't really want.

Order one and I'll bet it shows up sooner than you think. Buy that one and every day that rust will bother and every night you'll wonder why you didn't order one. Just my two cents.

Sixdogs is soooooo Right!

Pay to order, or if there is only one brand you can get, Guess you are stuck! Sorry, Like you we in Canada have the same problems. My closest dealer for my Hustler is 3 hr. away, and on top of that I drive past 3 JD dealers to get to him. JD has had issues in my neck of the woods, all of my friends have had issues.

I personally would not buy if he offered a $5,000 discount. That is a lot of visible rust, what about the rust you can't see. RUN, don't walk away from that deal. Bite the bullet and wait. Unless you just moved to the island you have already been waiting. Don't rush into a purchase you will regret later.

Is it possible the new one will look EXACTLY like this one down the road... Bare cast iron and that area of the country don't mix.

That is kinda what I was asking - is this normal for six month's outside storage? Or is it indications of something else? I'm on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the main port is Honolulu on Oahu. I don't know for sure, but a lot of the "stuff" that comes from Honolulu is on open barges. I was worried this might have come that way and had a wet and rough trip. And perhaps it just wasn't rinsed with fresh water upon it's arrival.

But I have no way of knowing - hence - my question - is this a normal condition for six months in rainy weather, outside near the coast???

Buy it and take it home and spray the rusty area's with WD 40.

I wouldn't want it personally, but it seems about anything sitting outside close to the ocean really suffers. On my son's first deployment out of Mayport, he parked his new truck in their long term lot and several months later it looked pretty rough, he took a cab the next time.
