I just completed my 50 hour service on my BX24 (without too many mishaps!) and was going to go ahead and perform the same service on my RCK60B23BX mower deck. I lubricated all grease fittings and then was going to change out the gear oil. I looked at the manual and it showed the drain plug on the opposite side that mine is on. My drain plug is directly over one of the belts. If I attempt to drain the oil, it will spill all over the belt.

Could someone that has drained their oil before provide me with how you accomplished this without making a huge mess? Thanks

Remove the deck, stand it on edge so the drain is the lowest point on gear box, you can even turn it upside down and drain from the filler hole.
No matter how you do it you will have a mess. But you do not have to do this everyday so it is not too bad. KennyV.

I don't have the manual in front of me right now, What is the recommended gear oil change interval for the deck?

Thanks,
Steve

I have not changed mine yet as I had the dealer do mine as part of the 50hr. I did top mine off over the winter and while I had the deck stored I popped the belt off the tensioner just to reduce wear and tear on the mechanicals. That would at least get the belt out of the way. Easy to do with a good pry bar and not a problem to reinstall.

My question is has anyone else noticed how hot the gear box runs on their RCK60". I mow till I'm done, nonstop 4-5 hours and I could touch the box but I wouldn't want to hold on for long and I never wash the deck till it cools. Dealer says it's OK but I suspect this winter will find me putting synthetic oil in it. Is this something any oneelse has experienced?

Good suggestion KennyV. I didn't think about standing it up on its edge. This will also get more old oil out than if it was laying flat.

Steverichmond, the recommended interval for the first gear oil change is 50 used hours. I didn't keep an accurate count of actual hours but I think I have about 35 hours on the mower. Since I was doing all of the other services on the tractor, I was going to go ahead and change the mower gear oil also.

Synthetic will run much cooler. KennyV

Anything to back that up? Case in point I changed my 60 mmm to Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 from the OEM fill. My temp meter says no change in temps...

I use an oil extractor to remove fluid via vill hole..easy

I put a small aluminum cooking pan under the drain-I bend it to wrap around the housing. I still get a little leakage-but not too bad.

Ditto. Put a block under front corner away from drain and bent small disposable aluminum pan to catch the oil. Pan rested on belts. Left it there for about 15 minutes while box drained. Not a drop on mower deck!

Three great suggestions 1. Put mower on its end 2. Use an extractor 3. Use aluminum cooking pan. Now the decision on which one to use. Thanks for all of the replies.
