extractor is the way i plan to go.thavil said:If your deck is similar to the RCK60B23BX, the fill hole is on top of the gear box. The drain/sight plugs are on the side. You fill to the bottom of the sight plug (top plug). For me, it took about 12oz (the manual said .38 qt).
I finally changed my gear oil this weekend after getting all of the great advice from this forum. I went ahead and attempted the quart plastic bag trick and didn't do so well. I blocked the opposite end of my mower up but I guess I didn't get it high enough. At first, all fluid went into the bag but as it slowed down, the fluid ran down the side of the gear box and not all in the bag. Oh well, not too much of a mess. I finished draining the fluid by getting out my manual pump extractor. I think I will buy a better extractor for the next time and just use it.

Indeed. As much as I love my Kubota, I must admit that the first time I realized this, I just about fell off my feet. I just couldn't believe that such a reputable company could sell tractors with such idiotic, user-unfriendly and potentially damaging designs.
On my deck (RCK60-F30) even filling the gear box is an incredibly dicey proposition. You have a super cramped space with less than one inch clearance, an access angle for a spout or a filler that's over 75 degrees, and both acess holes are JUST ABOVE THE BELT... Let just a couple drops of gear oil fall down there, and... well...
Ditto. Put a block under front corner away from drain and bent small disposable aluminum pan to catch the oil. Pan rested on belts. Left it there for about 15 minutes while box drained. Not a drop on mower deck!
I am draining my MMM 54 gear box oil for the first time since 50 hours. I followed the advice of those who've posted on this thread. I put a block under the opposite drain and the oil is barely trickling out. My garage is about 65 - 70F and the gear oil has not been used since Nov 2009. Does this sound right? Probably a tablespoon of oil has drained in about 30 minutes.
no it doesnt sound right either. looks like you were low the whole time.![]()
Also, I didn't have the top plug open. It took about 10 hours to drain the dumb way.
