Always disconnect the negative cable before the positive and reconnect positive first. However I've done many custom exhaust jobs on new trucks and welded the pipes and brackets to hang from the frames and never disconnect the battery. I service most of those vehicles at the shop I work at regularly and never had a problem except when I tried to use an O2 sensor as a ground once. Just make sure the ground is close to where your welding (no computers in between) and you won't have a problem. Highly recommend welding that bracket though. Those lift supports can put around 60 pounds of pressure on your bracket or more.

I don't disconnect the battery. I can't tell you how many times I have welded these on with a mig. Not to mention welded other parts of countless cars, never disconnected a battery that was still in the car, never had a problem. Neither has any of the other guys that worked for me in my shop for 30 years.
Customers don't like having their radio and clock memories wiped out from disconnecting the battery, and many don't know how to reset them.

I never have either. I guess there's always a chance tht something will get fried. But, I haven't fried anything yet:D
