I've never seen those short ones either- here is a site that sells them, I doubt I'd find any locally- patchboy: TR #575, 1 1/4" Brass Truck Valve, 1 Valve

they are a little different than the ones ampsucker has, his appear to have the nut inside where these have it outside.

Here is another one- Short-Short Metal Tire Valve, Tires & Supplies - GEMPLER'S which brings up the question of what size hole is in the rim..??

Then I found these- http://www.hcwsinc.com/products.htm really cool but pricey, looks real stout especially with the caps!

as far as i can tell, it is a standard tire valve stem but made of all metal except the rubber mounting bushing. and it is short, very short, which i think is the key to keeping it from getting damaged. it doesn't stick out close to the edge of the rim like the old oem one did.

the cap screws on just like the black plastic ones, but is metal and there is a standard, removable valve core under the cap, not a schrader style, but regular automotive.

i had to go to a "real" tire shop, one that invests in quality equipment (hunter alignment machines and road force balancers) and that does work for a lot of the big rigs in town. none of the mom and pop or chain stores had them locally.

next time i'm in, i'll see if i can get some more info. the photo is from the front wheel of a bx24 and it looked to me like a "standard" rubber valve stem would fit in there. as far as i know, the hole in the rim isn't any special size. i will check on that too, next time i have one done.

I think the Schrader valve is the "regular" valve core...
Anyway I was intrigued and ordered a set of the Surevalves with caps from the HWC site...after I get them installed I'll report back;)

my understanding is schrader's are the bicycle type with a locking valve stem. automotive are the regular ones without locking valve stem.

anybody with time to post up pics, let us know who's right.

Thank's Amp! Good information. Skyco, I looked those sites you posted. I was never aware so much stuff was available. I bookmarked those sites for future reference. I could have ordered a few things if I had known about the things on those sites.

While I don't consider 'wiki' to be the be-al definition source.. they are generally pretty good.

In this article.. they ID the schrader valve as being used in auto tires, bikes, and fuel injection and refridgeration.. looks like all the stuff we were talking baout.. etc...

ahh, that would be my bad, then. i was indeed thinking my narrow bike tires used schrader valves, when in fact they were presta type valves.

so, automotive valves are called schrader valves.... hmmm... have to file that away for future use. i think i've been making this mistake for over 20 years, now.... learn something every day!

so, yes, the new valve stem i found for the bx front tire is indeed a normal schrader type automotive valve made all of metal and short.

sorry about the confusioin skyco, and thanks for posting the reference soundguy!

Then I found these- Surevalve (TM) Products and Accessories really cool but pricey, looks real stout especially with the caps!

Installed them yesterday, used the deluxe kit with caps- I like them:D Did it all myself pushing the bead down with a high lift jack under the trailer hitch on the truck. Used two shims under each valve to keep the stick-out down.
Just wish I'd found them and done it before I'd put a quart of Slime in each back tire and a pint in each front tire:p

The bicycle ones with the nut on the end of stem to pull up on stem are Presta type valve stems
