OK I can shift on acceleration but on decel I can't get that to work, what is the key to that?

Engine speed and tranny speed have to match before it will go into gear.

Just tap the throttle to increase engine speed then try it.

Many syncroed trannys are not fond of being shifted without the clutch (my Jeep is one of em), it will increase wear on syncros.

The key is to know the RPM differences between each gear. When down shifting from one gear to another, place the transmission into neutral, rev the engine to that known difference and quickly shift into the lower gear. When the engine and transmission speeds are the same, it will slip right in gear, up or down. Kinda like playing a musical instrument, things begin to sound better with practice.

I am not sure it's possible to float the gears on all standard pickups. I have driven many semis and am very proficient in the move. I had an 87 Dodge D50 that you could float them up and down with no issues. My 94 F350 was a whole different story. It did not matter what I did, I could not float them going up. And I tried LOTS of times. I could float them down with no problems. I could down shift all day, but not up. Go figure....

I'm curious, why do you even want to shift without using the clutch? Seems to me like the rebuild of the transmission could get very expensive.

It does not hurt the tranny when done right and you save the clutch.
