OMG make the **** "zoom-to-last-post" thing stop. i open a new thread and it dumps me at the bottom of the page on the LAST page of a thread ive never opened before.

ive looked for a setting to turn off such a stupid feature (i have a feeling the "zoom to last viewed post" is broken)

That's the way the php forum code works and it can't be turned off. I find it helpful not having to drill through an entire thread to find the last post I have read. If you are being taken to the newest post to a thread that means you missed that thread on your pryor visit.

Unfortunately tracking visits on an individual thread level would be too resource-intensive for our site. We have a forum upgrade coming soon... perhaps that will bring some new functionality in this area.

Steve, a little tip you may not be aware of: On the typical keyboard there are 3 sections: The left "keyboard" (alphanumeric) we type on, the far right numeric keypad, & between what I call "page control." Just to the right of the BACKSPACE key are (among the 10) HOME and END. HOME will take you to the top of the page, END will take you to the bottom of the page.

I agree, it's kind of irritating how the board automatically takes one to the first unread post, whether one has read ANY of the thread or not, but understand it's a function of the board code.

Hope this little tip helps some in dealing with the problem!

BTW, Mohammad, many thanx for giving us a place to learn from each other!

Another work around for this "feature" is to click "Mark All Read" on the forum index page before going to the individual forums. No threads will be highlighted (bold) showing unread messages, but you won't be linked to the last message in the thread.

i still am haveing this issue.

the above "excuse" about forum resources doenst fly. If you can individually track which threads ive read, then you can keep up with which post on that tread i last looked at.

Should be a simple script modification to the cookie already in use.

Since you seem to know a lot about this, perhaps you should post the simple script modification.

1. Listen and respond with empathy.
2. Ask for help in solving the problem.
3. Maintain and enhance their self esteem.

You forgot to apply the three key principles... although I think you technically may have hit #3, then #2 . :)

On multi-page threads, click page 1 and that will take you to the top of page 1 regardless of what is read or unread.

On single-page threads, clicking the thread link will jump you to the first unread post on page 1. If you had marked the forum read and there are new messages since then (but not enough to generate a second page), it will jump you to the first new post since you marked the forum read.

Muhammad,

Yes, technically, that's how it *should* work. And actually, its how it used to work, up until a few weeks back.

It was really nice -- I could click on a thread I'd never read before, and it would take me to the first post. I could subscribe to the thread and come back later to see it was modified. Then it would take me to the last post I had read, and I could continue on. Now, it wouldn't always work that way -- if a thread hadn't been updated in a long time, it would sometimes take me to the first post, but in general it worked well.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that when I clicked on threads, it would skip past all of those that I hadn't read and take me to the very last post. Argh! But yeah, clicking on the first page would take me to the first post, yada, yada, yada. So, what used to be a nice feature is now broken, and broken in a way that can be quite irritating to those of us who were used to the way it used to work.

Maybe I just need to clear out my browser cache and cookies?

This happens in both IE7 and FireFox, but I just recently installed FireFox, and it did migrate all of my cookies over from IE7.

Since you mention an upgrade, would it be possible to automatically subscribe to threads we post in? I usually remember to change the thread subscribtion part at the bottom when I post, but not always....

Thanks for your support! I appreciate this site.

Regards,
-Steve

:D It's all about finding solutions.

I think things are working well. If I see a thread that I have never read anything in before, and I click on the link to it, I am taken to the first post in it, even if it is a multiple page thread.... unless I have "marked all read" sometime since the thread was started. If that is the case, it takes me to the first post in that thread that has been made after the time when I hit "mark all read". It makes sense. It thinks I read it already. It is no big deal to go to the top or bottom of the page and select Page1 if I want to read the thread from the beginning.

Steve,

You can set your default subscription mode by going to Edit Options on My Home and selecting the option you'd like under the "Default Thread Subscription Mode" heading.

As for when threads are marked read, I've tweaked some settings that should store the read/unread data a little longer. Now the system is configured to remember what is read and unread for 60 days (previous was 10). It's impractical to keep this data indefinitely, but 60 days should be long enough to cover most active threads. Of course, if a thread has had no posts in 60 days but is replied to, but you never read any of the threads, you will be jumped to the newest post.

Thanks, Muhammad!

I missed that when I first signed up...

Back to the subject at hand....
I cleared out all of my cookies, and Voila! The thread display mode went back to the way it used to work. (My Home --> Edit Options --> Thread Display Mode).

Schmism, maybe give that a try?

ill try a cookie clean, but i have little hope that that will fix the problem. I firmly belive its a forum softwere setting that got tweeked incorrectly.

if i click an attached immage it opens in the same tab (like it should) i click back, it dumps me at the top of the thread, not at the post i was looking it. it should remember were on the page i was. Its not.

i suppose ill have to do some testing to see if the return to last unread post is working the way one would expect it to.

The only thing i can say is it seems that one month it works great, the next month it doesnt work, we post that "something changed" and then for the next 3 months we try to get it back the way it was, ... finnally get it back to something that works well (or get used to the "fix" to something that wasnt broken in the first place ) and a month after that we start it all over again with some "change".

all the other vBulletin forms i frequent (more than afew) take advantage of a stock vB feature and stick a small icon (usually this one
firstnew.gif
but it can be any custom pic/gif the adims choose) out front the thread titles that if clicked take you to the first unread post of that thread. so if you read the first 5 posts (end of the thread) and 3 more posts are added (it shows up as new to you) and you can click the button it takes you to the last post you read. Otherwise you simply click the "new" thread and it drops you at page one thread one.

I am pretty sure this is a browser issue, not a forum setting. As explained in this thread, I tested it and found the forum to be functioning properly.

Yeah, we disabled that feature because prior to using vBulletin (which we implemented in 2006), our forum automatically jumped you to the latest new post in the thread.

I suppose we could implement the standard vBulletin new post link, but for most users they would have to adjust to that change.

Perhaps we will offer a default vBulletin theme set at some point for users like you who would prefer the standard layout.
