guys,
i made a rfp on a walco dump box, models 495 (48"X48"X18") 290 lbs, and the model 395 (36"X36"X10") 120lbs to a kubota dealer.
he responded that the model 495 was to big to go on my bx1850. aside from the visual that a 48"X48" is a RATHER/VERY large platform box to have behind my tractor, anybody have an idea why he said that????
prices on these boxes are dear ($500.00 for the 395), don't know about the #495.
i don't know if the 395 will meet my needs as a carryall box doing property patrol/debris/tree limb hauling w/chain saws etc., etc.,
anybody see em laying about your favorite tractor dealer? thanks, shrekbelly

p.s. whereas, i don't actually have a wood workshop, i may set to buiding my own carry all, at the complete garage of an industrious friend.

I have the Walco 495 (48"X48"X18") and it's a very handy attachment on my machine. I am use to haul firewood and also as a counterweight for the FEL.
By loading a pallet into the box that is loaded with bricks and blocks, I will be able to quickly add or remove ballast - as soon as I get the TPH forks, that is.

I suspect the reason that the dealer recommended against the 4'x4' box is the distance that would put your load from the rear axle. You'd need to do a quick moment diagram to confirm this, taking into account wheelbase, CG location and any front weights or FEL. Unless you have some serious weight on the front I bet you'd be awful light on your steering.

One other thing to consider is that overhang wagging around back there (both it terms of length and width) does restrict your ability to maneuver in tight areas. Unless you really need the 4'x4' size for a particular reason, get the smaller box.

baby grand,
you're probably correct about the weight/c of g/rear axle. i was intending to use front weights additionally and/or weight in the fel.
i liked the idea of the bigger, deeper box. perhaps, neil messick could chime in? thanks, shrekbelly

gents,
i guess i must be more perplexed by this than i thought . . . how does one add and operate a 350 to 400 lb tiller on the back of a bx then? (of course,
front counterweight is mandatory). i can't imagine ever loading more than 200 lbs in the dump box shrekbelly

1* The front blade on my BX1500 counter balances the rear tiller.

true, i could mount the hd 60" blade as a counterbalance. . . . but i think, that might be a little to unwieldy when doing my dawn and dusk property WORK patrols. plus, i hate to admit it, i'm growing fond of the fel. shrekbelly.

Shrekbelly,

The CG of the 4'x4' box is a little over 24" aft of the lower link pins on the TPH. I think a tiller would be more like 7" to 9", so a big difference in lever arm length. But if you counterweight the front with the FEL, or maybe if you keep the load light as you suggested, then you should be fine. I typically have about 500 - 600 lbs of material in mine, plus the weight of the box itself puts a total of about 850 lb at the CG, pretty far from my rear axle. That's a fair tail load for my machine.

I'm glad topic came up, because I was wondering if anyone knows where a tractor owner can find out how much weight their tractor (without FEL) is supporting at each axle? I sort of guestimated a CG location a little aft of midway between the axles, but I'm not really confident that that's an accurate assumption.

Well then put the FEl on and use it to haul that stuff with and ya would not really need the 3ph utility dump box .

. . . not so quick - LB . . . as your dual 1500's (don't know about the rest of your fleet) sit on the low side, so does my 1850.
from the seat, i'm able to reach to the turf with my magic, indespensible, clawed, trigger closing picker upper--to pick up the potentially hazardous sticks, limbs, branches, and golf balls in direct harms way to my mm mower deck, blades and their sharpness. i've got to pickem up sooner or later. the utility box gives me a reachable target to hit with one smooth wrist motion & and a good release. the fel is too small a target . . . yes, i've tried!
thanks for the feedback, shrekbelly
