I have a 3030 and Landpride 1058 rototiller. The darn rototiller has jamed 4 or 5 times and I have only rototiller 7000 square feet. When a rock no bigger than 5" to 7" size rock gets jamed in the tiller the whole tractor shuts down. This tiller has a slip clutch. Should this stop this kind of thing from happening? The last rock bent the tine and know the tiller will not turn at all. When I bought it I told the salesman that I want to be a able to put in my lawn and he said there would be no problem with rototiller? Unfortunatley, it has been nothing but problems.

The dealer is going to pick it up today hopefully.

Any feed back would be appreciated.

You need to read manual and adjust the clutch on ANY PTO DRIVEN implement you put on your tractor. never trust a dealer to your safety, If clutch is not properly adjusted It will really mess up your day (broke or twisted PTO shaft)

your slip clutch is frozen. Back it off and readjust and what you are talking about won't happen. THere should be a sizeable section in the manual on it...

THought at this point something in the transmission line is probably toast.

If you are having "Small rock jamb" problems raise the rear flap. This will let some of the rocks go out the back rather than bouncing back into the tines and jamming.:D

I agree about the adjustment of the slip clutch. the slip clutch does exactly that to prevent killing your tractor when hitting something solid such as a rock or tree root. you just need dig out the manaul for your landpride slip clutch and follow the steps in adjustment.

Better check,.. there is usually 3 allen head set screws that you have to back out for the slip clutch to function. They should be located on the tiller gearbox end of the shaft.

Yes, no and maybe.
If you are running at the full revs required to get 540 at the PTO then yes, the slip clutch should slip when the tiller jams.

But - but, but, BUTT !!!
That doesn't mean its OK to carry on with the clutch slipping.
Hit the clutch ASAP, put the tractor in neutral, disengage PTO, shut it down, free the jam, etc.
PTO clutches can and DO burn up if there is enough slip for long enough.
Basically they only protect the drive train and engine from sudden shock loads.

Even if the clutch is properly adjusted I would expect a jammed tiller to stall a tractor if it is just chugging along at 600 or so RPM.

Also, if this is a hydrostatic tractor I would expect it to stall from a jammed tiller as soon as you take your foot off the pedal.

If you have rocks and know it, maybe you should get most of them up with a different tool before rototilling.
For a lawn you want them OUT anyway, not turned under (-:

Ditto on raising the rear flap on the tiller. My KK will spit out rocks from 3" to 18". The larger ones make a lot more noise...

I have found that I have the adjust the landpride slip clutch before I use the tiller every single day, or its useless.

If thats a 5' or larger tiller it should stall that tractor pretty quickly if it locks up. The slip clutch should slip a few turns to prevent the stop from being too abrupt -- about 1 second is good, at most 2. It should get warm in a stall, but not hot. I suspect yours is only a little too tight and is slipping only a fraction of a turn - quite an abrupt stall. The tiller is usually able to take the brunt of a fairly quick stall w/o damage unless it is underated for the tractor. In some equipment combinations, due to mismatch of capability, its afine line between too loose and too tight. My 5' KK stalls the L3450 on occassion. No tine damage yet. If I were to put it on the Mahindra the slip clutch operation would be very critical to being burned if too loose or destroying the tiller if much too tight.
