Got Ambushed Last Night and Shot!

Since I have five kids and they have dozens of friends who are always congregating at my place, my first 'weapon' of choice when I hear something at night is my Surefire M6 Guardian as seen here SureFire High Power Flashlights - M6® Guardian®

I have something with a bit more punch in my pocket should the situation arise, but the M6 seems to have quite a shock value.

As has been evidenced by -EVERY- country to restrict private ownership of guns.. that only restricts the law abiding people.. criminals are not the ones obeying the restrictions.. thus the more restrictive the policy.. the more the law abiding citizens are penalized. .. you can look at every gun ban in history.. same outcome. Banning guns is not the answer.. ( banning criminals is ).. and untill the entire population realizes that it is a criminal that causes a problem, and not the tool that he carries, then we are going to still have problems. A tool by itself does not cause a problem. Take a screwdriver for instance. int he hands of a mechanic it is a great tool.. in the hands of a criminal it is a burglery implement.. do we ban screwdrivers? heck no.. we need to 'ban' the criminals...

Thats the reason that i'm glad that my country is more restrictive when it comes to gun posession... I just know too many people which i would not visit late at night anymore, without yelling that you're coming, before taking the walk to the driveway... Whether they have a crime record or not, just says nothing about a person's ability to make decisions in fractions of a second...

I'm not anti guns, i just know too many friendly, decent people who i dont want to say BOO to when i know they have a gun....


In Holland, we have our own type of fun: ITs a tradition to pop calcium carbide in milk cans at 31 december. Calcium carbide isnt being used in 50 years by the blacksmith to torch steel with the gas that occurs when wetting the calcium carbide, but you dont need a permit to buy it.
As allways, some rednecks need a bigger bang than others, so instead of using a 35 liter milk can, they build a gun:

Yep.. too many people think that taking away weapons makes victoms safer.. it actually just takes away a good defense tool, as the criminals don't give up their guns.

To speculate a bit here... "IF" you could magically remove all the guns from the earth at the push of a button.. I forsee knifings and beatings moving up to replace the shootings caused by criminals. Same criminals.. same mentality.. just different tools. to think otherwise.. is well.. sticking your head in the sand...

Calcium carbide ..... I haven't seen that stuff in years. I didn't know that blacksmiths used it. It was used on construction sites pre generator days just after WW2 in the UK for lighting. The bottom half of the lamp was filled with carbide, the top half was filled with water and they were screwed together. You turned a small knob that regulated the amount of water dripping on to the carbide in the bottom half and lit the acetylene gas that was given off.

We kids use it to go fishing. You packed it into a cane syrup can and hammered the lid back on. Next you knocked a hole in both ends with a nail and off you went to the river. When you found one of the deep holes that the salmon used to rest in on their journey upriver, you lobbed it in and waited. Pretty soon there was an almighty explosion and the salmon came floating to the top. You grabbed what you could and ran like h*** before the gamekeeper showed up. It wasn't exactly sporting or legal but it was a lot of fun.

hypothetically speaking here... in general...220 genset with about 20' of 10-2 wire with a pug on one end, and then the other end, the wire is spread into a 'y' about 3-5' apart with insulation stripped off the last 6" of the y end. lay the line out inthe water.. throw some chum in the middle of the y... be out of the water!!! as fish take the chum in the 'y'.. hit the power to the plug.. fish float to the top.

I... uh.. have only heard about this of course.. i um.. wouldn't do it myself because it seems a tad dangerous.. and is probably expressly illegal...

i am not pro gun ban, or anti guns, i just am glad that you need regular training to keep your guns permit in this country. In other words, you can only own a gun here, if you excercise with it at the shooting club, and get regular training in targeting and decision making.

We could elaborate in this for a long, long time, but i think you cant turn the gun owning tradition in America back anyways, banning guns now, would turn things for the worse.
If guns were banned today in the USA, for sure only those who abide that law will suffer from it, just as you say, because so many guns are still around.
In Europe, criminals dont expect guns in the hands of the citisen whose house they break into, so most of them need nothing more than a crowbar or a knife to successfully attack home owners.

In Europe, there is a status quo, not many people own guns. Not civilians, not criminals.
In America, there is also a status quo. Home owners have guns to protect themself, so criminals cant do anything with a crowbar, so they need to bring guns to the job as well.
Those situations have historically grown that way, and i dont mind if it stays that way. I would like to have a gun, but i would even more like when not every idiot can own one.

Most violent crimes in Holland are shootings between drug gangs (i dont care if they take out each other, it relieves our legal system from prosecuting them) and armed robberies: Most armed robberies are when people are taken hostage: When hostages are taken, its not the ideal situation when guns are in untrained hands, it will make matters worse.
