I must admit.. I'm also a fan of dangerous & violent criminals getting smoked in the commission of their crimes.. and yes.. I agree.. it takes some burden off the legal system and the public taxpayer s if there are a few less criminals to prosecute and get paid for sentences.

Most violent crimes in Holland are shootings between drug gangs (i dont care if they take out each other, it relieves our legal system from prosecuting them) and armed robberies: Most armed robberies are when people are taken hostage: When hostages are taken, its not the ideal situation when guns are in untrained hands, it will make matters worse.

Since I have five kids and they have dozens of friends who are always congregating at my place, my first 'weapon' of choice when I hear something at night is my Surefire M6 Guardian as seen here SureFire High Power Flashlights - M6ï½® Guardianï½®

Dargo, you spent $425 on a flashlight?!?
For that kind of money it ought to do the dishes, milk the cows, and put out the cat too.

Renze, your country is on a slippery slope, IMHO. All future victims, just like Theo. I can say I know both sides, the communistic government didn't allow guns except for members of the power - and Virginia is a pretty reasonable state as far as guns are concerned.

There is a reason ******'s Germany let only police and military to own guns.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country." --Adolf ******, dinner talk on April 11, 1942, quoted in ******'s Table Talk 1941-44: His Private Conversations, Second Edition (1973), Pg. 425-426. Translated by Norman Cameron and R. H. Stevens. Introduced and with a new preface by H. R. Trevor-Roper. The original German papers were known as Bormann-Vermerke.

Give the guy a break. He could of bought the SF Beast ($4,000).

I have a handfull of lights that cost $250 and quite a few in the $90-150 range.

Quality does cost.

Except that the bulk manufacturing expense is probably somewhere in the 10% range on those products!

IF the tool does the job as well as you want it done and you are willing and can pay the price to get that level of quality then it should not be an issue regarding manufacturing cost since it is unlikely any of us could buy at the MFG cost.

I just have a problem paying 10x the cost to manufacture some realitively normal items. There are of course some exceptions. Medical devices almost always have built in 1000% inflation.. etc.. I expect that.. and it's pretty universal. However.. more mundane devices with huge markup for a name mostly.. plus features that could be duplicated at a lower cost? not for me. ( but if someone else wants it.. go for it.. that company needs customers like them! )

And your alternative is?????

There are various ways to set prices. One is a multiple of cost, either parts or parts, labor, and packaging etc etc.

Another is cost plus profit.

Another is perceived value. An item that costs 50 cents or a dollar to make but which saves you a hundred bucks will likely be priced up at the $50 level unless it is so tremendously trivial as to be ludicrous.

What are your viable alternatives when you have a need to be filled but the products that are available to fill that need are "overpriced?" Do you build your own? Can you build your own? Can you build it for less than buying?

I am lactose intolerant. (That's right I will not tolerate lactose, I just will not put up with it, not even for a little while just to seem like a nice guy!) Lactase enzyme is available, packaged in liquid form and or in caplets and such to make lactose digestible. I am not a stranger to manufacturing or manufacturing of certain pharmaceuticals. Over $10 for 15 mililiters in liquid form is preposterous... but what are the alternatives, get a temperature controlled vat and set up to do my own? Not cost effective. Buy caplets, grind them up and dissolve them in water? Not a good thing as you need a far more controlled "environment" than tap or even distilled water.

Some generic drugs are priced way high versus the cost of manufacture.. do you make your own?

Sometimes when you have a need to satisfy, you have to bite the bullet and pay the price. It rankles me too when I know the outrageous disparity between cost and price but... I can't make everything myself. I used to make my own tube type preamps (Fisher kit), power amps, O'scopes and on and on but in reality would have been further ahead to get a part time job flipping burgers and take the cash to the store and buy the gear I wanted.

The alternative is to buy another product or combination of products that do what I need.

For instance.. I don't need a 400$ flashlight...

Many times you pay a steep premium for convienience in bundled items.. IE.. a cellphone that is also an ipod, and a gps unit, and your PDA. miniturization also costs. However.. the downside is that when you drop/break/loose your candy-bar sized 500$ Iphone.. you are up the creek cuz you just lost everything.

My wife just went thru this.. dropped her phone... now.. no ipod, no phone, no gps, no pda... I on the other hand have a seperate phone.. seperate mp3 player.. seperate palm pilot.. ( no gps.. ). I paid less for all my products.. and if i loose one.. I only loose one... For instance.. If i loose my mp3 player.. I can dial my phone and get a new one! i do realize that sometimes convienience is worth the price. For instance.. If i traveled alot.. I'd want all that stuff in one small james bond wristwatch.. rather than an assortemnt of items. My wife travels.. so to her.. it's worth it..... me.. I'll buy the 5$-35$ flashlight, and put the rest of the money away ;) I wear glasses anyway... I', sure my 25$ led flashlight will help me see just as good as my weak eyes can with a 400$ flashlight!!!!!!

I have no need for a $400 flashlight but if you can find a handheld, solidly built, 500 lumen light that outputs a wall of light, for $25, please buy me one.
I will find a need for it.:D
