In my opinion, my AC 5020 has the best safety system,,,, a switch on the pto lever, so if the pto is engauged it won't start, and a switch on the tranny where you must shift the tractor into S, not neutral to start. I will not tolerate any type of operator presence device on any of my machines, the manufacturer may have to put them there, but they are not going to stay. but it does tick me off when they tie them together and I end up having to kill them all just to get rid of the seat device.

Aren't you afraid of getting sued when somebody gets hurt or killed on a tractor you've altered or disabled the safety features on? L B ??

The correct answer for this is no. I dont allow anyone else to use my tractor.

I will have to disagree with you, while it can be inconvenient (Cub Cadet lawn tractors I am looking at you) generally it is a good idea. last week when the lawn tractor I was mowing with lost traction, slid backwards and rolled I was glad that the blades automatically shut off when I went off. I think that there should be a operator presence switch when the tractor is in gear or the PTO is on, HOWEVER it should NOT be tied to the brake (so that you have to set the parking brake before getting off the tractor). if you fall off the tractor when it is in gear, you would want it to shut off ASAP before it (or your implement) runs you over.

however (IMHO) there should be a override switch that allows you to leave the PTO on when getting our of the seat if the parking brake is set AND you push a button, the operator presence switch would then be off until you restarted the tractor. that would allow you to run a sprayer, 3pt BH, waterpump, auger, chipper etc. if you are running something like that you should have the parking brake on anyway so that the tractor does not roll away.

But I don't think that a butt checker would save you if you fall off a tractor while running a hog. At least mine, will spin for over a minute after shutting off the engine and as the rotating mass is several hundred pounds, it will still cut you up into little pieces should you go under the deck. (Ick, what a way to go....) I stay seated while it is still spinning. Even with the thing lowered to the ground....

that is your right, and people disagreeing in the past has caused me to change my opinion.

is that with the PTO engaged or disengaged??? my dads 6' bush hog is the same way, if the PTO is off it takes a few mins to wind down, however if the PTO is still engaged when the engine turns off it should slow down faster (being as it has to turn the engine and all)

that is a definite probability, however the more chances I can give myself to survive the better...
that being said, a bush hog is an exception to the norm. if I am pulling the mo-co, the sickle bar mower, or a disc and fall off (not likely as I always wear my seat belt when using PTO powered equipment and normally wear it if I am pulling a implement) I am more likely to not get runover/cut up if the "butt checker" is working

On most modern tractors, there is a built in one way clutch in the PTO. It allows the implement to rotate freely without transmitting any power back to the transmission.

Tractors from the early 60's and back, were direct connected between the implement and the transmission. Many many many seats have been stained brown when the clutch was put in and the tractor powered into the ditch, trees, barn, road, etc when the rotational energy of a bush hog powered the transmission.


Here's an example. Today I was using the post hole digger. Backing up the tractor I was standing up facing the rear, one hand behind me on the steering wheel, one hand on the PHD angle lever rod, left heal on the HST peddle creeping it backwards to get exactly on the spot to dig. While drilling the holes, the arc goes down and the auger then is angled to the front of the tractor. If you want a vertical hole, you have to watch that and creep the machine forward about 8-10" in concert with the arc dropping. That would have been about impossible sitting in the seat as you have to hold the lever on the PHD to keep it vertical or it will naturally tilt off by 15-20 degrees from the connection to the PTO.


I don't expect you or anyone else to jump up and convert to my method. Nope, to each his (or her) own. What ever you do, do it smart, don't rely on any mechanical safety and don't get hurt!

I think what John said about post hole diggers makes perfect sense. I have a very minute reason why I dont like seat interlocks. When it is summer time it takes my air conditioner a shot period of time to cool down the cab. If I need to get out of my tractor for a few minutes to hook up chains or move something or even pile stuff on my forks. I like to leave the engine running so the cab can cool down or stay nice and cool. I dont have to do that but I like being able to. Sometimes you can get ridiculous about safety. OSHA regulations say that for me to do any work on a machine I have to have it locked out, tagged out and all mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical energy disipated. If I have to replace a belt then I have to have the machine running to get the belt to track right, with the OSHA regulations I could not accomplish that. If we have to remove a jam ( think like in a copier machine paper jam) I stop the machines operation and then remove the jam and let the operator start the machine and continue to run. According to OSHA I would have to stop the machine, turn off power, clear the jam, turn on power wait for all the computer systems to come online and start talking to each other ( about a 10 min process) then let the operator start the machine. If I had to do that for each jam or other minor problem the operator would never get finished with his work ever. When my boss starts annoying me too much I ask him if he wants me to start following OSHA regulation that usually cools him off a bit.

At my age I'm never in a "hurry"...Safety switches are there for a reason...They're not in place for me to try and defeat them to gain a few seconds of time because of the inconvenience...Have been on the local rural volunteer fire department and pulled too many people out of machinery...It ain't pretty.

I purchased the best safety feature with my tractor, I bought one with a CAB!!!!

I don't like the seat switch because I'm a light weight. I can't operate the diff lock and HST pedal w/o picking my rear off the seat and the tractor killing. I would be open to a momentary over ride switch.

BUT I don't think the government should regulate ME. It's a law now here you HAVE to wear a helment when driving or riding a motorcycle. I would NEVER ride my bike w/o one, but I don't think I should be told I must. If I'm stupid enough not to, and I crash regardless of who's fault the accident is and I'm more injured as a result, that's MY fault!!!! I would much perfer an insurance reduction if I wear one and those that choose not to pay more rather than a Law.

Same thing with the tractors. I like some of the safety's, **** happens. But it shouldn't be law. I would look at it as an additional feature when shopping. I wouldn't own a mower w/o a seat switch, as said before **** happens. They have their place and I respect them, but come on, what happened to common sense and natural selection?
