Mobil 1 vs Amsoil Case Study

I once owned a Fiat 124S sedan. I changed the (dino) oil religiously at 3k miles on it. At a little over 80k miles, it broke a valve spring. So, I removed the head and replaced the spring. Checked for a ridge normally found at the top of the piston ring run, because the rings normally grind away a bit of the cylinder walls. There was NONE.

I might be wrong, but I think Mobil 1 changed off the pure PAO. I thought they are now a type 3 synthetic.

Personally I don't think there is one oil change interval that will fit all. So much depends on driving conditions, length of the drive, the type of engine, environment the engine is run in. I think that is where 3K came into being. To really see what it should be, you need to test your oil several times and find out when it needs to be replaced.

Just as a note I use shell rotella T synthetic in everything, I change at around 3K, but for me that is about 6 months. If I take a trip and have a lot of highway miles I will go 5K in a modern fuel injected car. My motorcycle gets 3K also, but that is because it shares a gearbox with the engine and they tend to be very hard on oil.

Buyer beware:

Valvoline and Castrol both use hydrocracked petroleum base stock in their "synthetics". In many countries those oils can't even be called synthetic but Castrol filed a law suite and won oil companies the ability to market any heavily modified petroleum base stock oil as a synthetic in the good ole' USA.

This isn't an attack against these companies, heck, I use valvoline 50W racing oil by the case because it's one of the best oils in it's class but their "synthetics" aren't all their marketing departments give them credit for. I'm not saying they're bad oils, just not made using the same process that Mobil 1 and many of the other, more expensive, synthetic oils use.

Yes, but when Mobil lost the law suit, they decided it was dumb to stay full syn. so they changed their product to a semi syn just like all the others.

Fact.

No you are right. Sent the Mobil 1 fanatics into a tail spin.

Well all oils have advanced technologically to the point where sludge and varnish are almost nill anymore. And lubrication is good with all of them .

Well, interesting study, I just got my uoa back with my Amsoil series 3000 5w30. After 18k without adding any makup oil or a filter (Amsoil # 52 extended drain) my test came back at 5.3 for a tbn and viscosity was 35. The test said good for extended use so I might change in another 10k, or might get another test for 22 bucks. I think Amsoil is darn good stuff for these numbers especially fo a diesel. Later, ihookem.

been using Mobil 1 in all my vehicles for years and years.... no scientific results... but always ran 10 to 15000 miles before changes... because I do it myself and things get in the way of changes.

results include

Toyota Camry... 97,000 miles, rolled by teen son, getting 34MPG

toyota Camry...297,000 miles, engine destroyed, should have changed timing belt, getting 32MPG

toyota camry...180,000 miles, automatic transmission died, engine ok, 30 MPG

F350 small V8 gas engine, rebuilt at 65,000 miles, burned valve, can't prove it, but suspect a Ford manufacturing defect rather than oil was the cause. 16 MPG, unhappy with that ford, now at 120,000 miles engine OK

Toyota Camry...180,000 miles, still running 30 mpg

Toyota 4 Runner...90,000 miles, still running, 18mpg

Kubota diesel tractor... 620 hrs, still running

I was suprised to see the Amsoil 5w30 turn into 15w40 after 10K. If I wasted to run a 15w40 oil, I would run a good diesel synthetic.... I have never used Amsoil, and that article will keep me with mobil 1...

Guess you do not follow Amsoil ASL and there basestocks...This WAS 100% normal for these old forms...

Interesting to see more opinions on this. I just became an Amsoil Prefferred customer. Was using Mobil 1, but getting sick and tired of the crappy selection places like walmart and others carry. With Amsoil, I can get exactly what I want and need, and a nice discount too.
