Gentlemen,

I need some help with a new to me Gator XUV. Its a 2007 Diesel that seems to have many options on it. This was an odd deal since my father picked this up for me and he did not do what I asked. Instead of looking things over and asking questions, then calling me about buying it, he just bought it.

So, I paid 9,000 for this with 50 hours, includes a plow, hydro bed, taillights, offroad lights, bush guard, and some other stuff. Pretty fair deal.. BUT..

This has never had the oil changed. I will do that ASAP. Nothing has been lubed, and nothing has been taken care of. At least not to my standards

So, could you guys clue me in on things I should look for. I have the brake recall, and I dont think I am in that. I heard about a clunking noise, dont hear that... What else should I look for, or change.

Also, when it is at idle, it has a sort of rattle to it, sounds like it could be the clutch? It actually sounds like the muffler insides are loose, but they are not. Also, it seems to need a lot of rpms to move. Might just be me not used to it...

Thanks for any and all help!

Besides changing the engine oil and filter, I'd change the fuel filter and change out the transmission fluid. If it's like my HPX, there's a few grease fittings on the front drive shaft. I use the John Deere synthetic 5w40 in my diesel HPX. John Deere HyTran fluid goes in the trans. I'm was thinking real seriously about trading for an XUV Limited but my HPX runs so good I doubt I'll get rid of it.

I am thinking of changing the front diff fluid also. This has fairly low hours on it for a diesel, so I am going to run some Biodiesel through it then change the filter after it cleans the tank and system....

I love the Deere manuals. In one section they recomend Plus 50, then another they don't recomend any viscocities that plus 50 comes in, and they say use turf guard...

Nice. I think your right, a good syn 5w40

The Plus 50 would be used with the diesels, Turf Guard would be used with gas engines. I use 15w40 Plus 50 in my tractors and had used it in the HPX. Tried the 5w40 Synthetic and found it let the Yanmar idle a lot smoother. The engine tends to surge a bit at idle in cold weather until it warms up. The 5w40 Syn got rid of the surge.

That is exactly what I thought.. I put some syn 5-40 in it. Runs great. The oil I drained was pretty clean. The diesel oil is already black:D I am glad its doing its job! I might short change this stuff out in another 50 hours if it seems like its really cleaning stuff out...

I have the diesel purring right now. If I could only get the clutch to quiet down I would be in business.. Its pretty loud. Like an old 1070's snowmobile...

Take the clutch enclosure off and check the driven clutch at the hub. I have seen a couple crack right around the hub. It fits your symptoms. It makes a rattling noise with high engagement rpm but still will drive. If it is that repalce the belt also.

I don't really have a high rpm engagement after getting used to it, at least I dont think so. It does not engage right off an idle, but it does engage smooth. I looked at alot last night, and can hear the "ring" from the driven clutch. Its not crazy, just a little anoying. I will pull the shield and take a better look. Thanks for the tip.

deisel shouldn't have a enclosure.

Mine has a 1/2 enclosure. the bottom is protected, just not the top.
