Mobil 1 vs Amsoil Case Study

/ Mobil 1 vs Amsoil Case Study #31
been using Mobil 1 in all my vehicles for years and years.... no scientific results... but always ran 10 to 15000 miles before changes... because I do it myself and things get in the way of changes.

results include

Toyota Camry... 97,000 miles, rolled by teen son, getting 34MPG

toyota Camry...297,000 miles, engine destroyed, should have changed timing belt, getting 32MPG

toyota camry...180,000 miles, automatic transmission died, engine ok, 30 MPG

F350 small V8 gas engine, rebuilt at 65,000 miles, burned valve, can't prove it, but suspect a Ford manufacturing defect rather than oil was the cause. 16 MPG, unhappy with that ford, now at 120,000 miles engine OK

Toyota Camry...180,000 miles, still running 30 mpg

Toyota 4 Runner...90,000 miles, still running, 18mpg

Kubota diesel tractor... 620 hrs, still running

You'd get the same results with any old oil that meets specs.

Fact
We ran regular oil from Penzoil in Sheriff's Cruisers and went 220,000 plus on the engines ( with 7500 - 10,000 mile oil changes) .
That is also a fact.

It's hard to argue against dino oil when you look at taxi and police fleets. We have police cars in my city that run 24/7 almost 365 on 5k oil changes. The PD keeps the cars to about 100k and then they go to Parks and Rec. In 15 years I've never seen a police car engine go because of dino oil.

Right now I am using mobil 1 5w30 turbo diesel oil in my 07 Dodge 2500 and in my TC 40. My wife's Toyota Sienna got dino oil until 50k miles. She had a great deal with a oil shop because the shop is a commercial buyer from the company where she works. I decided to start using a syn. oil in a hope to possibly add a few more miles to the engine. I don't wan to get a loan on a new car in the present economy.

True, but does it provide the best protection??

Again, throw in used oil duration vs synthic, oil protection/longevity etc. Dino is great if you have old tech...LOL

Interesting to see more opinions on this. I just became an Amsoil Prefferred customer. Was using Mobil 1, but getting sick and tired of the crappy selection places like walmart and others carry. With Amsoil, I can get exactly what I want and need, and a nice discount too.

And when you call & ask a question . Amsoil will give you answers. Mobil will tell you (at least they did me) ''WE don't give out that information''

I will say Mobil is flatout RUDE on the phone...I would NEVER buy a mobil product..

I'm sorry, but that response just begs the question; Do you own and operate the absolute best equipment? If not, I don't see your point. If you can only afford "good enough" equipment and don't have a multimillion dollar fleet of the absolute best equipment available, what does it matter? If you're not going to go with the most expensive and best equipment, why do so with oil?

That's some really flawed logic there.

I agree Ray. The better you treat your tools, the better they will perform for you.

All threads about dino versus synthetic are absolutely pointless. As a result they have a very short life.

Most synthetic oils have better lubricating characteristics than most dino oils, e.g., better flow at very low temps, longer change intervals. These better characteristics are facts, not opinions. That's not the issue. The issue is do these advantages apply in your specific situation. If they do, buy synthetic. If they do not, buy the least expensive oil that meets the oil recommendation in your Operator's Manual. If they don't and you just want to spend the money, go for it. Absent such a situation, there's absolutely no evidence equipment performs better with a synthetic.
