Mobil 1 vs Amsoil Case Study

Here's a scenario:

I can't afford a Lexus. I can afford a Yugo. The Lexus benefits from the use of synthetic oil.

Will the Yugo benefit from the use of synthetic oil?

Give me your logical answer.
How does a Lexus benefit from using synthetic oil?

All right, one more time.

I can't afford a Lexus. I can afford a Yugo. The Lexus benefits from the use of (insert Mike's preferred oil brand here).

Will the Yugo benefit from the use of (insert Mike's preferred oil brand here).

The Lexus is operated in an environment where the average winter temperature is -10 F.

The Yugo is operated in the same environment.

Both will benefit from the better low pour performance of synthetic oil. But that's not the point. If you toast the engine the Lexus you take a bigger financial bath than the same problem in a Yugo.

Synthetic oils perform better when operating in extreme temperatures, and allow longer intervals between changes. These are the two main advantages of synthetic.

This remains consistent, regardless of what equipment it is used in.

If you need to operate in extreme temperatures, or desire to extend your intervals, there is an advantage to using them. If not, there isn't.

You are correct. "Both will benefit from the better low pour performance of synthetic oil."

THAT is exactly the point.

If I toast the engine in the Lexus, it would likely cost more than replacing the engine in the Yugo.

But remember - I can't afford the Lexus. I can only afford the Yugo. So, to protect my investment in my precious Yugo, I will still adopt the best maintenance practices, use the best oil, etc. - because the Yugo is the best I can afford. Just because the Yugo costs less and costs less to replace is no reason to skimp on maintenance or maintenance materials.

The cost to replace the Yugo might be proportionally greater for a person of my income and means than for replacement of the Lexus that others could afford.

It really boils down to what another previous poster said (paraphrase): If you take care of your tools (or cars, boats, planes, etc.), you will almost certainly be rewarded with better life and performance.

Dargo implied- no, wait - he said - that if you don't have the best equipment, then you shouldn't use the best oil. Obviously, "best" is a very subjective term. Again - that is the flawed logic. Even if you don't have the best equipment, it can still benefit from the best oil, regardless of it's initial cost or cost of replacement.

Even you admitted that both a Yugo and Lexus would benefit from the use of your preferred oil. Or whatever.

Take care.

I love these oil conversations. I really do!

Like the infinite number of monkeys pounding away on typewriters, we TBN members will one day hit upon the Holy Grail of Oils, the definitive hydrocarbon elixir to lubricate the engine so well we won't even know the engine is running.

And no, I've had nothing to drink. Yet.

for what its worth and those that may want to go with Mobil 1.. My local Sams Club (lynchburg, va) had Mobil 1 5w20 & 5w30 in a 6qt box for $31.50 (about $5.25/qt). Im thinking walmart is around $6.25/qt for the same stuff..

For those with a diesel - they had rotella T 15w40 two, 2.5 gal junks for $49 (walmart is around $27/jug i believe)

Think I got about 4 containers of the new 0w30 Mobil 1 at Walmart for about $23 for each 5 quart container. Sent in for a $5 rebate on the first one.

All engines changed to 0w30 (some leftover 5w40 Mobil 1 used in the 1983 Benz diesel) except for my generator. Got a container with a couple quarts left in it on top it to remind me next times I run it. Last changed 1/1/2007 to 5w30 Mobil 1.
