For the past 2 or 3 weeks I have watched this "art" being constructed on a hillside (BLM land) about a mile and a half from me. Apparently it is being done by an Australian artist who has done similar artwork all over the world. It's about 200' high and must have cost $30 to $40K to build. There were 40 to 50 workers and dozens of semi-loads of rock used.

Inset is picture of artist and a closer view of the rock.

My only question is ...WHY?

Christo came immediately to mind. He has done a lot of huge art work on public land like that, but his website doesn't list it under his current projects.

They're really extravagant! There's 2 more at the bottom of the hill outside the picture.

Pennwalk & Willl - this is being done with private funds. Some people have too much!

I agree with Will, it seems like a way to get rid of money so that whoever is paying for this can say they did something with the money and will need more money next year. Kind of how the government works.

While I disagree with this being art, or even worth looking at, I do admire the ablity of the so called artist to be able to sell it to somebody. I'm convinced that 99% of those who make a living as an artist are really great salesmen who have figured out how to sell their "crap," but don't have any real skill as artists.

I saw a TV show on this guy recently. He's done a number of these types of sculptures around the world. They seem to become local tourist attractions so they do have some benefits for communities who want something that will get tourists to stay in town for an extra hour or two.
