For the past 2 or 3 weeks I have watched this "art" being constructed on a hillside (BLM land) about a mile and a half from me. Apparently it is being done by an Australian artist who has done similar artwork all over the world. It's about 200' high and must have cost $30 to $40K to build. There were 40 to 50 workers and dozens of semi-loads of rock used.

Inset is picture of artist and a closer view of the rock.

My only question is ...WHY?

I wonder who will see it? How is he going to sell it? Who payed for it?

Christo came immediately to mind. He has done a lot of huge art work on public land like that, but his website doesn't list it under his current projects.

They're really extravagant! There's 2 more at the bottom of the hill outside the picture.

Pennwalk & Willl - this is being done with private funds. Some people have too much!

I agree with Will, it seems like a way to get rid of money so that whoever is paying for this can say they did something with the money and will need more money next year. Kind of how the government works.

While I disagree with this being art, or even worth looking at, I do admire the ablity of the so called artist to be able to sell it to somebody. I'm convinced that 99% of those who make a living as an artist are really great salesmen who have figured out how to sell their "crap," but don't have any real skill as artists.

I saw a TV show on this guy recently. He's done a number of these types of sculptures around the world. They seem to become local tourist attractions so they do have some benefits for communities who want something that will get tourists to stay in town for an extra hour or two.

ET, of course. It is a message inviting him to come back

Doh I should have known that. :D

Maybe it isn't finished in the picture. I can't quite figure it out.

I wonder what the art critics had to say about Stonehenge.

Chuck

Nothing.

If they did say anything negative they would have been labeled blasphemers and immediately sacrificed.

Reminded me of 15 years ago when I went to a small universtiy to move a Microwave hop. There were all these fence psots in a row than another row heading another direction. I say to the school engineer " what do you have some kind of farm program here" He says " that is ART" my reply "well put some wire on those post and you would have a great pasture.

We go along fine after that. He even showed me the viewing platforms for the art. They would have made great feed bunks.

With this art being only a mile and 1/2 from my house and clearly visible, how much do you think it added to my property value?? I was hoping at least $50K!

If they love it, potentially 50K bump, on the other hand if they hate it, potential 50K drop.

The tax assessor will surely agree that it has increased your property values by $50,000 and tax the property accordingly. :( Now if only you can find a sucker, I mean buyer, who agrees to the new price.

Many members of my family are artists. My mom was into abstract art. She did some pretty wild, intense stuff with huge, deep personal meaning to her. I didn't care for most of it when I was young. I was more interested in my dad's WWII watercolors depicting action and jungle scenes. But as I get older, I can appreciate what my mom was trying to express in her works. And now that she's gone, I cannot discuss it with her. So, yes, most of her work did not appeal to me. I would not hang most of it in my house. But I would never call it crap as it meant something very important to her. And that is what art is....
