CK20 redesign ?

   / CK20 redesign ? #21
I have noticed a marked improvement in the hill climbing ability of my CK20S in high as I have put more hours on it. The first time I used the tractor when I got it, I was a little worried as it seemed to struggle with a couple of small hills on my property, but as I have added hours, it seems like the engine has picked up some power and while it may bog slightly, it is not the problem that it was when new. I think I would prefer a 25-27hp engine in this tractor before adding the 3rd gear. Additional power might make the 2 speed trans more usable.

Of course add the 3rd speed and the power and it might be closer to perfect.:)

I recently bought a Kubota B7800. When looking at Kioti, I REALLY liked the CK20 - many things about it were excellent. For some reason the folks grumbling about the two-range transmission kept echoing in my mind.

The B7800 is a great tractor but considerably more bucks last time I looked.

As one of the grumblers about the lack of a three range HST on the CK20 and as a former CK20 owner, I need to put things in perspective: Given the choices on the market today in the same price range and considering Kubota's new B series, Mahindra and the CK20, I'd still choose the CK20 unless all I was planning to do was mow. The CK20 still has a considerably more powerful loader than the B series machines under 30hp.

I would rather live with a two speed hydro than a wimpy loader.

I feel I should clarify my thoughts, I think the ck20 really is an awesome brute and is a very capable machine and it is the size physically that I require for the jobs I do. It is a world above my old Kubota and well ahead of the similar speced Kubota's for less $$$,
but there are times I feel a little more power and another range would be nice but maybe Derek is correct
quote (I admit I have found a few things I could not do easily with my CK20HST but what it has done is amazing for it's size and power and if I needed more I would buy a larger tractor.

If everyone makes their smallest tractors bigger every year, the people who don't need the extra power and capacities will have to pay for more than they need. I like the CK20 just the way it is...)
But maybe Rick Wallace also is
quote(Well here is my thoughts...........
Get rid of the new CK27 pull that engine and put it in the CK20 and give us a new 3 range 24hp subcompact!)
So maybe the solution is to leave the ck20 the way it is and add a second model on that frame size with a little bigger motor and the extra gear for a few more $$$ but still cheaper than the similar and less capable Kubota's and Kioti would really have the best to offer everyone. Gary P.s. sorry about he long ramble.

Most if not all the other CUT manufactures are going with more HP in there CUT lines. There SCUT lines are now were the CK20 is at now. So should Kioti just drop the CK20 and go with the CK27 as the entry level? Just a thought.

Nope. The CK20 frame size is ideal for smallish acreage and that size is an important part of the market.

Once again, I think people need to interpret what is going on in this thread as constructive criticism and suggestions to improve the mightly CK20. I don't see any of the comments as suggesting it is a bad deal or non competitive, we are just suggesting a few changes that would make a great tractor even better.

And if Kioti ever did discontinue the CK20 I'd call up Rick and have him put one on layaway for me so I can have one once I'm finished with the work I need the DK40 to do.

Some of the question at least from me come from these comments:

Some have complained about power going up hills.

Absolutely. That is a relative weakness of the CK20 but its strengths greatly outweigh those weaknesses. The whole point about advocating for an upgrade to a 3 speed HST is to fix that issue. In the mean time, I managed to get my work done, just in low gear which made the going slower than it would have been if I'd had a mid range to choose.

I am not knocking the CK20 but I have one option on a purchase. I have had a Large Garden tractor with 2 ranges. I worked in low 90% of the time. How does the CK20 work in low range? Any hill issues?

We have plenty of slopes and hills at our dealership. Feel free to test drive the CK20S on all the inclines and hills we have and see if you like the way it performs. You can also try out the loader on a pile of dirt and dig way.

The upgrade on the CK20S to 22hp and the gearing changes have helped a lot.

No issues in low. It is a brute for its size in low. I like the fact that it is heavy enough that in low it rarely spins its wheels, especially in 4wd.

My issue with the earlier 2004 version was only related to the fact that there were jobs like mowing up an incline that I would have done faster if there had been a middle range. Low was too slow but plenty powerful. High was just geared a bit too high to go up a modest incline for a tractor that was also running a bush hog or burdened by the weight of a backhoe.

Michigan Iron says that there have been gearing changes even with the 2 speed. Maybe that helps. I doubt that one extra horsepower would do much however.
