Burning wood , Add-A-Furnace; Monarch, Longwood

I've used a Clayton since 1984 and it is still going strong. I lost a blower motor to lack of oiling a couple years backand had to substitute a Grainger Dayton blower motor, other than that it hasn't needed a thing. I recently moved and took it with me for my barn/workshop. My nephew bought one also a few years ago at TSC.

Anyone have a wood burning furnace which is tied into the gas furnace?

I have one-installed new with the house in 1975. The wood furnace an old Monarch brand, called Add-a-Furnace. Parts are extemely hard to find, but Ive found a few. Ive heard and seen a few Longwood furnaces, too.

Just wondering if anyone has a wood furnace that they purchased or built or if anyone is familiar with Monarch or Longwood?

It is funny that you would mention Longwood. When I built my house in 1978, I put in a Longwood dual furnace. It could burn 5' long logs as well as oil. It wasn't very efficient, and wore out fairly quickly. I now have a propane furnace and a Woodchuck 4000 wood furnace which I like. They are both forced air and tie into common ductwork.

I think that your furnace should be lined with firebrick for longevity and should have catalytic reburner for increased efficiency and reduction of creasote buildup. I only use the wood furnace when the temperature is going to be below 30, because it is best to have a small hot fire. The furnace also has a unit inside that preheats my hot water. It has it own hot water heater that feeds into my propane hot water heater.

Over the years I have probably burned 200 full cords of wood over the last 30 years so I do have some experience.

I just bought 22 full cords of wood which I have to cut and split, but it should last 3 to 4 years given the warmer winters that we have been having the last decade or so.

Hi all, I am new to these forums and in looking around I happend to come along this thread and have some info as well as some questions I was hoping I could get some help with.
First I recently bought a house with the monarch add a funace in it and am starting to use it and finding several things in need of repair.
I have found a company in washington that has parts for the monarch.

Homestead Vintage Stove Company, dealers in antique stoves.

My question is how long of burn times are you gettting out of these? per load of wood?
I just keep finding things wrong with mine and am repairing as I go but I am only getting about 3-4 hrs per load of wood(dried oak,elm and maple)? this is not good, is this common for this funace? It does a good job heating the house but at this rate I will go thru alot of wood this winter. I am thinking that my damper on the furnace needs some repair. (I am tearing it appart tonight)
Thanks in advance for any help

Burning wood , Add-A-Furnace; Monarch, Longwood what kind of question is this??

Furnace Filters

Dificult to answer your questions but I will try-
item 1. Oxidation of natural byproduct of trees at a high temperature.
item 2. The activity necessary when you remove-a-furnace, replace-a-furnace or construct a new furnace room.
item 3. Name of a butterfly, furnace or several other items-see context for specific use. (Also used to identify a head of state in some European countries.)
Item 4. Opposite of shortwood- often used to describe cordwood furnished to city dwellers using those little-bitty stoves when suppliers dump a hal cord of 26" pieces to fit their 16" stoves.
Glad we could clarify this for you.

Welcome to TBN.

We get about 3-4 hours of burn time in mine with seasoned oak and hickory. Sometime 5 hours if its a really dense piece of wood. TSC had/has a stove thermometer that we bought. We found that once the fire is started we can "shut" the damper down as far as it will go but still get enough heat to prevent creasote build up. And heat the house. :D By "shut" I mean the lever is closed as far as it will go but because of the design of the stove, air is still allowed into the stove.

I usually get up in the middle of the night anyway so I just put more wood into the stove. Even if I don't there is enough coals to restart the fire in the morning. Though the house might be a tad on the cool side. We heat the house with wood. We have a heat pump but only use it for AC.

Later,
Dan

I have issues with keeping my fire lit.I have damper open all the way, Is it possable that the bi metal sping is wore out? I have to leave it on hi and sit with the door open for about ten minutes in the middle of the night to get the fire hot enough to get the fan to kick in and the fire to stay lit. The damper looks like it is almost closed when it is on high, I think I understand how the auto-draft control works but it just seems like it closes to much when it heats up. Do these wear out?

I believe Yukons are great furnaces.
Longwoods are out of business I'm thinking.

I will likely replace the parts in the old Monarch but can anyone tell me if it is safe to burn without replacing the Upper Side Lining of the interior firebox? A chuck of metal just fell off as I was cleaning out the ash about the size of my hand. Is this interior liner just for additional efficiency with the burn or does it provide some additional safety as well?
