Now I don't know that area, nor do I know whether the road's name is correct or not, but the "US" stands for "United States". A state highway would be named "SH 68".

around here they use SR for state roads, ie: SR-21 for State Route 21
AFAIK we don't have any roads that are labeled US-xx just I-xx for interstates

It's a little surprising to me that you have no US xx labels, but of course you do have U.S. or federal highways. There are some variations in terminolgy in different states, as you would expect. You can see the Texas Highway Designations Glossary if you wish.

But if you look at a map, whether Texas, New York, or some other state, I think you'll find all U.S. highway numbers (by whatever name) in the same kind of "shield". Now I can understand using SR instead of SH for a state highway, but what would you call route 20 from near Buffalo to south of Syracuse. It's definitely labelled as a U.S. highway, but you might have another name for it.

At any rate, the Sheriff was right, of course, in saying that U.S. 68 is a federal highway (or at least it's so designated in Google maps and in my hard copy Rand McNally:D).

well, they may be federal roads, but they are not commonly called US-xx

Waddya know, it is officially called US-20, around me it runs along with SR-5 so it is commonly called 5&20.

you learn something new every day.

Another interesting question is I am wondering why the landowner allowed the trailer to be dumped on his property?

This took place over many hours, and if that had been my property I would have told the sheriff that the only way he could dump that rolling junkyard on my property is if the county indemnified me for cleanup costs.

And, I would have whipped up some kind of written notice and given it to him.

I just don't trust Pancake and Granny to pick up their mess...

The sheriff may be right to get it off the highway, and he may even have legal authority to commandeer private property in an emergency, but he doesn't have the authority to insulate the county from the financial consequences.

The cleanup doesn't have to cost the county a fortune. It would be pretty easy to round up a work release crew and show up on a Saturday with a county dump truck.

Once again, there's too much we don't know. A U.S. highway, or nearly any other road, includes some amount of land on either side of the pavement. So maybe the debris is on the highway right-of-way instead of on the adjoining property owner's property, so while he certainly wouldn't like it, he may not have any say in the matter. Or, of course, maybe it's on his property. However, I'll certainly agree with you that it needs to be cleaned up in either case. But in the event that the trailer owner does not clean it up, I'm not sure whether the responsibility falls on the county or on the state. I'd expect the Sheriff to make arrangements to have it cleaned up, but I don't know anything about state and county laws in Kentucky.

Well I know New York has US-20 and US-5 as I live on 20 and 5 runs along the lake a few miles away. SR-39 meets US-20 3 miles away from here and I-90 runs thru my property between US-5 and US-20. I think there are a few more US roads in NY but I can't recall them. Oh, I almost forgot about I-86 and SR-60 which I use quite often here in WNY.

I will say that generally we just refer to the US routes as Rt-20 and Rt-5 but then again we refer to the State Roads as Rt-39 and Rt-60 also (lazy I guess). The State of New York maintains all the state and US roads here excpet for the I-90 which has the Thruway Authority managing it (which is not really the state but is:confused::confused::confused:)

Should have read a few more post and I would have seen you found that already.

I went thru a similar situation getting rid an old trailer on my property. In my case it was a guy named Freddy who towed it away using his 78 F-150. I gave him the trailer if he could move it. Supposedly he made it OK, he said he sold it for a thousand bucks, I wouldn't set foot in the thing.

When I asked him about hitch not matching he said he was planing to strap it to a tire and then strap the tire to the 5th wheel mount in his truck. He said that had worked for him more than once! :D

Yep, just a quick glance at a New York map shows US 4, 6, 9, 9W, 11, 15, 44, and 209.;)

10 years or so ago I gave away and old rusted up leaky roofed 1952 8x30 Mobile Home that I had been using for storage for nearly 20 years.
The tires were flat and were buried in the ground up to the axles and the brakes were locked up.
The guy I gave it to had a time pulling it out of the spot where it was setting into the drive way a distance of 15 to 20 feet.
They had a full sized 4x4 pick up and a chevy full sixe 4x4 SUV hooked up and both vehicles would set there and spin in the drive way but finally after 2 or 3 hours they got it out into the driveway.
;)They earned their free lunch that day.:D

The syndicated morning radio show I listen to called the Sheriff about the story. :D

The posts from the other website is about what the Sheriff stated. Though he did say she paid Pancake $250 to move the "trailer" and that no permit had been pulled to move the trailer. The tires falling of the trailer and the hitch breaking was mentioned by S. Dick. He also said she was living in a two story house at this point.

As usual the press reports got it wrong. One report said the Sheriff as working a call PRIOR to Pancake destroying the trailer. The prior call supposedly was about a stolen pie. The Sheriff really got ticked off when he was asked about the stolen pie. He mentioned the reporter by name and said he had no idea were she came up with the pie story. Maybe the press wrote the story so that it would make country people look bad? Nah, the media would never spin a story...

Later,
Dan
