While there is no state law directly prohibiting open carry in NC I understand there are local jurisdictions that do prohibit. I also understand there is no law specifically allowing open carry in NC and there is some strange language about "going to the terror of the people" that basically has allowed someone to call the cops on someone else because their gun display frightened them and the carrier was subsequently arrested.
Clear as mud.
I'm not gonna try it. Has anyone open carried in NC? How's it gone? Seems to me the hassle factor would be extreme;y high....

Personally, what would be nice, is if there was one "national standard" that was accepted by all 50 states, so any type of handgun licence would be reconized in all 50 states (driving is a privilege, not a "right", yet your drivers license is reconized in each state to allow you to operate your vehicle).

Please no "national standard" too many eggs in one basket.

They are already working on a National ID, and if you follow that, it gets scary too.

Part of gun ownership is knowing the laws. You cross state lines, know the laws.

I agree. However, there have now been some news stories in other states where this issue is being "brought to light" because some people are pushing the issue.

It could be argued that being "hassled" is a small price to pay to excersise your rights.

Has anyone open carried in NC?

As mentioned, I haven't, however, but for the first time in 8 years living down here, a couple of months ago I noticed a guy open carrying in a supermarket store. My one thought is if you're an LEO, guess you do have a right to verify the person open carrying is legal to own a sidearm. Can't speak for an LEO, but this may be a little more nerve racking than a traffic stop.

You're correct, however it can get very confusing and frustrating. Driving up I-81 from NC to Pa, legally I have to store my sidearm in a locked container and store ammo seperately for a total of 15 minutes on an 8 hour drive.

Please no "national standard" too many eggs in one basket.

Why? As mentioned, we do it with a drivers license.

Bottom line IMO, if you are a law abiding citizen, not convicted of any crimes, you should be able to carry IMO.

However, and think about this. You'er a gun owner and dating a girl (not married of course). Have that girl make one complaint against you (per "abuse") in the legal system, and you could have your guns taken away. This did not happen to me, but someone I knew. The girl in question was a legitmate nut case (a real good looking nut case).

I agree a CWP valid in your home state should be valid everywhere, just like a drivers license.
Of course I also wish a fishing license was good everywhere;) A guy that frequents several states can lay out big bucks for multiple fishing licenses...

Open carry- one reason I wouldn't do it, even if allowed is- its like wearing a sign that says "shoot me first" if a BG comes in somewhere to rob it and sees your weapon.:( Nope I'd rather be concealed and allowed time to assess the situation...

I do think CCW licenses should require some training and testing. Here in SC its 8 hours classroom/ a range test/ fingerprints/ some sort of criminal check and a photo.

Not really much different than passing a driving/written test for a drivers license.

Sigarms- thanks for pointing out the open carry thing in NC- I really wasn't up to speed on it as I should have been- I now realize I was needlessly concerned about straying off my property (10 acres in NC) when armed openly- still wouldn't dare go into town with it open though!

I'm scared of the 98# weakling who keeps quiet!:)

Like I mentioned before... those creepy dudes with chips on their shoulders that had CC permit. However, to my knowledge, those creepy dudes never got in trouble with the law. And they had legal permits. So, it once again shows that the legal folks are the ones you probably have to worry about the least.

Yep, you need to know the laws.

I have seen here in WA carrying in the open in walmart and home depot. :)

. I've never been to Australia, and you never replied (or maybe I missed it) about your experiences with the USA. In general, all I know about Australia is what the media here wants us to know, and I suspect it is reciprocated by your media in regards to the "Wild West, Gun Totin USA".

I'm sorry , i overlooked your question . I have never been to the US , but have always wanted too . We have been saving for a holiday there next year . We have now decided to go to Scotland instead as it has been made quite clear in these couple of threads about guns that the US is not a safe destination . If the locals who know the areas won't go outside without a weapon , what chance would we have without one ? I guess i just did'nt believe it was that bad over there , i thought it was being exaggerated here .

The following applies to SC and NC, and I presume- much of the USA-

Being "detected" isn't a problem if the CCW holder is being prudent. Your weapon must remain concealed at ALL TIMES unless you plan on using it. Letting your weapon show or even "print" through your clothing is really bad form, a problem, and even a chargeable offense in many jurisdictions. I have a CCW but don't carry as much as I should for just this reason, it IS difficult to remain undetected particularly in the summer with light clothing.

Bottom line if a CCW holder is acting properly you'd never know he was carrying.

I agree. Plus add to a fact that merely 'seeing' a gun is not automatically a threat. I've seen a persons carry gun before.... as long is it's not being drawn down on me.. I really don't have a problem.. though might just keep an eye on the individuals actions.. should be pretty easy to tell if he's joe muggger.. or joe carry holder after a few minutes..

As for printing in summer.. it was for that very reason I got a 'wallet' styled holster and a small carry gun ( keltec .32acp ) it prints like a wallet, and doesn't have to be removed fromt he holster to be fired.. the top slide of the gun is 100% visible, so it is ATF legal. Not my first choice as a self defense gun.. but i'd rather have anything, vs nothing if attacked.

I've thought about that too.. a national permit.. not sure if it would be good or not... it would make it where there was only one law to repeal to kill ALL concealed carry everywhere.... but if nothing else.. how about universal reciprocity... ie.. any state allowing ccw honors all other ccw's from other states. That might get around a universal national license issue with states that otherwise have no provision for ccw....
