What are these foundations at Niagara Falls?

By golly, I think I have a picture of the tailrace portal.

Yup, You got it! BTW, nice photography! The Rankine plant would be just outside of the upper left portion of the picture. Now, imagine the other portal, for the Toronto Power, is behind the curtain of water, about a third of the way across the width of the Horseshoe Falls from the Cdn. side, visible in your photo. The surge tanks Robert was questioning are just out of frame, to the extreme right.

The reservoir in the second picture is an example. I just saw it and snapped a shutter on it.

Another nice shot - the reservoir behind the Robert Moses GS. You can barely make out the pump generating station. This reservoir, and the GS itself are fed by huge cut-and-cover twin tunnels that go under downtown Niagara Falls NY. Much of the Tuscarora Indian reservation land was expropriated in order to build this reservoir. Mr. Moses was not a popular guy with the Tuscaroras!

Jim, if you come back up to the Falls let me know and I will tag along with you as this stuff fascinates me. I have been playing on the site posted also. I love all the pictures from inside the plants as they currently sit.

Thanks for the offer Robert, but don't wait on me.;) If we come back up there, I'll definitely get in touch. The problem is we want to go out west on our next trip. It may be awhile before we get to come back. I would, however, be glad to look at any pictures you might take in the meantime.:)

Well I get a free room each month at the Fallsview Casino so I hope to take a lot of pictures if I can remember to bring my camera:rolleyes:. I am looking forward to spring time when it is warm so I can go wandering around. Hopefully my injuries will be healed up enough so I won't be limited on where I can go. I am taking Ava up there most likely after Christmas so I know I will have the camera then and will try to get some good pics if the weather is cooperating. The Fallsview Casino hotel gives some great views of the falls from the top floor.

Good luck with your trip out west. Someday I will find my way out there but for now I am happy staying local while Ava grows up some more :) But we most likely will be going to Florida this winter to visit some mouse.

Have any of you ever been up there for the festival of the light? Really pretty when everything is snowy and frozen.

Ice along the Falls in the morning. By night it had all melted as it was in the mid 40's

Nice shots Robert. The fountain in the casino is pretty cool, with the unusual horizontal generators, like what was used in the Ontario Power GS, integrated into the design. Nice shot of one of the intake gates for the Robert Moses GS. Similar ones across the river on the Canadian side serve the Adam Beck Plants.
Here are some aerial views with captions of the various plants for all the armchair urban explorers. Can you tell I'm bored at work? Let's start with before and after shots of the Schoellkopf Station that was destroyed in June 1956.
